The Chief State Solicitor’s Office (CSSO) is a constituent part of the Office of the Attorney General and provides solicitor services to the Attorney General and to Government Departments and Offices. Its mission is to provide the highest standard of professional legal services to the Government, its Departments and Offices, as economically and efficiently as possible and to support adherence to the rule of law.

Reporting to the Chief State Solicitor, the Assistant Chief State Solicitor (ACSS) is an integral member of the Management Board of the CSSO, leading one of the CSSO’s five legal Divisions, with legal, managerial and operational responsibilities. The ACSS leads and drives vision and strategy for their Division in line with the CSSO’s mission. The ACSS makes a significant contribution to the overall corporate leadership, management, operation and development of the CSSO and the achievement of its goals.

Each candidate must on or before the closing date:

  • Have a minimum of seven (7) years’ relevant experience as a practising solicitor in the State; and
  • Have sufficient and varied practice as a solicitor in the State so as to be in a position to carry out the functions of an Assistant Chief State Solicitor.

Periods spent in whole-time positions in the Civil Service, for appointment to which qualification as a solicitor was an essential requirement, will be reckoned as practice for this purpose.

In addition, the successful candidate will have:

  • Sound legal knowledge, excellent analytical abilities and the ability to operate as a senior lawyer in a complex, dynamic and changing environment;
  • A proven high level of management and organisational skills with the ability to develop and manage legal teams;
  • A proven track record of significant results delivery, effective evidence-based decision-making and sound judgment;
  • Strong commitment to the introduction and management of modernisation and change programmes.
