Key Working Relationships

The post holder will on a day to day basis have a working relationship with the nurse on duty, the Clinical Nurse Manager 1 (CNM1), Clinical Nurse Manager 2 (CNM2), the Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) and is ultimately accountable to the Director of Nursing (DON).

Purpose of the Post

To provide direct and indirect day-to-day care for residents. Support the provision of a high quality, hygienic and customer focused service including:

• Assisting Nurses and healthcare staff in caring for residents.

• Use a person centred approach to high quality resident care.

• Provide high standards in housekeeping, catering, laundry, portering or general duties as assigned.

• Promote service user choice and independence.

• Complete the relevant documentation as required as part of the role.

• Adhere to HSE policies and procedures

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Duties assigned to the Multi-Task Attendant will vary depending on the care setting.

• Support residents in directing their own lives in accordance with their cognitive and physical abilities in an environment that reflects the comforts of home.

• Respect residents, their families and each other as individuals showing dignity, courtesy and professionalism at all times.

• Act as an advocate for residents.

• Assist the Registered Nurse in the provision of a quality service by promoting and adopting a philosophy of care and working in line with national and locally devised policies and regulations.

• Ensure that care is carried out in an empathetic and ethical manner and that the dignity and spiritual needs of the residents are maintained and respected.

• Contribute to the development of a multi-disciplinary assessment and care plan and assist in its implementation and evaluation in consultation with the resident as appropriate.

• Carry out assigned and delegated responsibilities involving direct care and all activities of daily living under the supervision of a Registered General Nurse, e.g. to assist residents maintain standards of personal hygiene, laundry, dietary intake, physical, mental health and any other personal needs.

• Carry out assigned social activities as delegated and under the supervision of the Registered General Nurse.

• Assist members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) in the delivery of programmes for older persons in a safe environment.

• Prepare and serve food as appropriate.

• Attend staff meetings and contribute constructively to the smooth running of the centre.

• Maintain the confidentiality of all information made available to him/her during the course of his/her work.

Health & Safety

• Conduct his/ herself in a manner that conveys respect of the individual and ensures safe resident care.

• Report any incident or potential incident which may compromise the health and safety of residents, staff or visitors and take appropriate action.

• Ensure completion of incident/near miss forms.

• Not undertake any duty related to resident care for which he/she is not trained.

• Understand and adhere to all policies, guidelines and procedures.

• Apply precautions at all times to minimise the risks of cross infection e.g. clean up any spillages of bodily fluids.

• Ensure that all equipment is stored and cleaned correctly, and storage areas are kept clean and tidy.

• Report any breakage or malfunction of equipment to technical staff and/or appropriate others.

• Present to work wearing the agreed attire and identification, having regard to the highest standard of attire and personal hygiene.

Education & Training

• Attend induction and mandatory in-service education.

• Maintain continuous personal and participate in team based development, education, training and learning.

• Develop and use reflective practice techniques as part of the MDT.

• Participate in appraisal and the development of a personal development plan in conjunction with his/her line manager.

Administrative

• Maintain and monitor appropriate levels of consumables supplies in the unit.

• Maintain appropriate records to facilitate the ordering process / enable cost monitoring in line with financial regulations.

• Answer the telephone, respond to queries, take messages and deal with queries as appropriate / agreed with the Registered Nurse.

• Promote a culture that values diversity and respect in the workplace.

Operational

• Be courteous and helpful to patients and their relatives and respect each other person’s privacy and dignity at all times.

• Present to work wearing the agreed attire and identification, having regard to the highest standard of attire and personal hygiene.

• Acquaint themselves with Health & Safety at Work guidelines and obligations including e-learning programmes on HSELand.

• Ensure an adequate knowledge of the emergency action and fire plan. Be aware of fire precautions and procedures and attend fire drills once a year.

• Conduct his/ herself in a manner that conveys respect of the individual and ensures safe resident/patient care.

• Report any incident or potential incident which may compromise the health and safety of residents/patients, staff or visitors to the person in charge and take appropriate action.

• Understand and adhere to all HSE policies, guidelines and procedures.

• Follow HSE Policy with regard to confidentially in relation to patient care.

• In accordance with Health and Safety at Work Policy, it is each staff members responsibility to observe all rules relating to Health and Safety and Conduct at Work and to use any equipment provided in a safe and responsible manner.

• Participate in appropriate in-service training sessions including fire safety, moving techniques in patients care, hand hygiene and any other such sessions as organised.

• Be able to work as part of a team.

• Have knowledge of Children First and complete HSELand Introduction to Children First on line e-learning programme. It is HSE policy that all staff irrespective of role, grade or position must promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm.

• Have knowledge of Safeguarding and complete HSELand Safeguarding training programme.

• To be aware of:

o Infection control procedures

o Complaints Procedures

o Incident and Accident reporting

o Risk Management

• Support, promote and actively participate in sustainable energy, water and waste initiatives to create a more sustainable, low carbon and efficient health service.

Confidentiality

It is essential that we maintain the privacy of people who use the healthcare service. In the course of the employment the appointee may have access to, or hear information concerning the medical or personal affairs of patient/residents and/or staff, or other health service business. Such records and information are strictly confidential and unless acting on the instruction of an authorised officer, on no account must information concerning staff, patient/residents or other health service business be divulged or discussed except in the performance of normal duty.

Eligibility Criteria

Qualifications and/ or experience

Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc

(a) Eligible applicants will be those who on the closing date for the competition:

(i) Possess the relevant QQI Further Education and Training (FET) Level 5 Certificate in Health Service Skills.

Or

(ii) FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Health Service Skills or Healthcare Support.

Or

(iii) A relevant healthcare qualification.

Or

(iv) Be currently employed as an Attendant, Multi-Task or a comparable role and be willing to undertake a QQI/FET Level 5 programme in Health Service skills or equivalent.

If (iv) of the eligibility criteria applies to you, the responsibility to undertake the relevant qualification lies with the applicant.

And

(b) Candidates must have the personal competence and capacity to properly discharge the duties of the role.

Health

A candidate for and any person holding the office must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.

Character

Each candidate for and any person holding the office must be of good character.

Post Specific Requirements

Demonstrate your experience and or knowledge of the role of Multi-Task Attendant.

Other requirements specific to the post

Flexibility regarding working hours as post may require out of hours service as assigned by Manager i.e. evening service, weekend duties.

Citizenship Requirements

Eligible candidates must be:

(i) EEA, Swiss, or British citizens

OR

(ii) Non-European Economic Area citizens with permission to reside and work in the State

Read Appendix 2 of the Additional Campaign Information for further information on accepted Stamps for Non-EEA citizens resident in the State, including those with refugee status.

To qualify candidates must be eligible by the closing date of the campaign.

• Demonstrate experience of working in a caring role e.g. previous role as a carer in a continuing care environment.
