The Park Superintendent - Tree Officer Grade II will be part of the professional team within National Historic Properties.
Reporting to the Chief Park Superintendent, the role will include:
Efficient implementation of the OPW Tree Safety Management System in National Historic Properties
Coordination of tree management services for Heritage Services
Working closely with colleagues across Heritage Services
Contributing to strategies, policies, standards, and technological advancements in tree management and ecological services
Specific responsibility for tree health and safety
The duties include, but are not limited to:
Collaborative engagement with relevant managers across Heritage Services for delivery of Tree Safety Management Policy commitments
Providing leadership to foster a tree safety culture and collaborating with all relevant stakeholders
Further development of the Tree Safety Management System
Providing arboricultural and scientific input into policy documents, including GIS and technological advancements
Advising on industry standards, legislative and environmental requirements
Coordinating the management of OPW tree resources and arboricultural training of operational staff
Conducting tree surveys, risk assessments, and data input for tree management software
Preparing Tree Constraints Plans and Veteran Tree Policies
Providing specialist arboriculture advisory services to OPW sections and Government Departments
Promoting public awareness and tree-related initiatives
Coordinating tree research projects
Advising on biosecurity and legislative issues relevant to trees and protected environments
Managing tree-related projects including procurement, consultants, and budgeting
Ongoing commitment to Continuing Professional Development
Directing and supporting outdoor staff and communicating with stakeholders
Drafting responses to press queries and other tree-related information requests
Participating in the Performance Management and Development System (PMDS)

Vacancies and LocationThere is currently one vacancy for Park Superintendent - Tree Officer Grade II.
The successful candidate will be based in one of the OPW offices (see Appendix 1 for Irish locations).
Final location will be determined in consultation with the Director of National Historic Properties.
A panel will be created from this competition to fill future vacancies up to September 2026.
Work is divided between field and office.
Travel to various sites, including occasional overnight stays, may be required.
Travel expenses and subsistence allowances will be paid as per Civil Service regulations.

Candidates must have on or before Thursday, 14th August 2025:
A Level 8 qualification (minimum 2nd Class Honours) or NARIC Ireland equivalent in:
Horticulture
Landscape Architecture
Arboriculture
Related disciplines such as Forestry, Environmental Sciences, Woodland Ecology, or Land Management
A minimum of five years’ experience in Horticulture, Landscape Management, and/or Arboriculture, including park/tree management
Additionally, candidates must demonstrate:
Strong understanding and working knowledge of arboricultural systems and ecological services
Excellent technical knowledge and its application
Understanding of legislative, environmental, and safety requirements
Experience in managing staff and services
Experience planning/delivering projects, including budgeting and stakeholder management
Capacity to manage procurement processes
Proven track record in staff/project/service management
Strong organisational skills under pressure
Practical approach to technical and management issues
Commitment to quality and high standards
Strong interpersonal skills and effective teamwork
Excellent oral and written communication
Willingness to share knowledge and expertise
Proficiency in Microsoft Office
Commitment to Continuing Professional Development
A valid Category B driving licence and/or access to a car in Ireland
Note: Candidates must demonstrate the key competencies for this grade.
Desirable CriteriaExperience with veteran trees, historical research, conservation plans, biodiversity, and biosecurity
Experience managing urban woodlands or tree collections
Experience applying health & safety legislation and industry standards
Project management experience
Procurement experience (including tendering, supplier selection, and contracts)
Experience using GIS and IT tools (e.g. i-Tree)
Experience in lecturing, public speaking, or publications

Salary Range: €66,688 to €90,198 per year
