DP-3 Researcher/Senior Researcher/Scientist - RF acoustic MEMS/PiezoMEMS RF Devices

Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term

The Advanced RF Technologies (ART) Group at Tyndall National Institute (TNI) and University College Cork (UCC) is advertising for the position of the Post doctoral Researcher / SeniorPost-Doctoral Researcher/Scientist in RF acoustic MEMS/PiezoMEMS for well-qualified and highly-motivated researchers with experience and strong interest in MEMS/piezo MEMS acoustic resonators/filters (e.g, SAW, BAW, FBAR or similar) and heterogeneous integration of PiezoMEMS with integrated passive devices (IPDs). The post holder will be employed as the lead researcher of an interdisciplinary and ambitions project in collaboration with the PiezoMEMS group at Tyndall and will develop highly-reconfigurable RF filters and front-end components for the next generation of 5G communication systems. The project will use as a basis Tyndall’s in-house piezoMEMS microfabrication platform. The postholder will require competences in piezoMEMS/acoustic resonators/filters, multi-physics and electromagnetic design, microfabrication techniques and RF characterization. Furthermore, the postholder is expected to perform some fabrication work in the process and cleanroom facility of Tyndall National Institute and supervise PhD students on a day-to-day-basis.

The candidate will be given an initial 18 months contract with scope for extension to 36 months subject to performance and availability of funds.

The successful candidate will become a member of a diverse and vibrant community of academics, research professionals and students at TNI and UCC and will have access to world-class, microfabrication, mechanical testing, and RF characterization facilities at TNI, UCC. Further information on our community and infrastructure can be found in the following websites: Advanced RF Technology Group: https://advancedrftechnologies.com/, University College Cork: https://www.ucc.ie/en/, Tyndall National Institute: https://www.tyndall.ie/.

  •  Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
  •  Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
  •  Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post

Essential Criteria

  • PhD degree in Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering. Mechanical Engineering or related discipline with a strong background in acoustic-wave resonator/filters, piezoMEMS design and fabrication.
  • Typically 5+ years post doctoral experience of multiphysics and electromagnetic analysis and simulation
  • Proficient in using multiphysics and EM design tools, e.g. COMSOL (or similar), ANSYS (or similar), HFSS (or similar).
  • Good understanding of microfabrication processes
  • Experience in MEMS mask design
  • Demonstration of experience with RF probe station characterization
  • Strong publication record in IEEE journal and conference publications

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in clean room-based fabrication/microfabrication
  • Knowledge in microsystems and general MEMS design/fabrication
  • Experience in using RF circuit design software, e.g, ADS Keysight or similar

Appointment may be made on the IUA Scale for Post-Doctoral Researchers €38,630-€45,942 pa and Senior Post-Doctoral Researchers €47,264-€50,029 pa. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
