Spooky Opportunities

Have you ever worked in a Spooky Job?

We’ve taken a look around to see if we can find jobs or careers choices that are definitely not for the faint hearted.

Embalmer opportunities with Ireland’s Death Care Academy

Did you know that we have a Death Care Academy in Ireland. The organisation was set up under the guidance of professionals within the funeral sector in Ireland. Its aim is to provide an opportunity to learn and develop new skills in this area, courses include Grave Care, Mortuary Cosmetology, Funeral Professional Psychology, handling ‘Grief and Your Work’ and Manual Handling Specific to the Funeral Industry – yes that’s how to lift bodies, I guess. Learn more here.

That reminds me of a story my hairdresser told me once. She has a little book where she keeps a record of some very special bookings. Hair appointments for her regular clients in the event of their death. I swear, it’s a true story. It all came about when one of her regular old lady clients died. The family were distraught when their Mom’s body arrived back for the wake looking like a person they just couldn’t recognise. The hair was all wrong and the eye shadow and lipstick colours were like something from an 80's disco make up pallet. Hearing of their upset my hairdresser called up to the house and quickly rectified the problem to the relief of the family.

Word spread around the town and very soon her little special book filled up very quickly, with all the old ladies putting their name down for the same service . Obviously, she didn't know when these appointments would happen, but she had an arrangement with her loyal clients that if anything happened to them the family were already instructed to contact her.

She would go to the funeral directors with her little hairdresser's bag and work on styling their hair exactly as they liked it every week. While there, she'd also advise on how their make-up should be done, so they looked their best.

Paranormal Investigators

undefined

There's some spooky volunteer positions available as well, for example Paranormal Searchers Ireland welcomes applications for volunteer trainees to join their non-profit team of investigators. Their objective is to prove the existence of Paranormal activity, capturing evidence of Ghosts, Spirits, Legends, Demons, Angels and everything supernatural. Sign up here.

Spooky Hotels

undefined

How about working in a Spooky Hotel? We have some across Ireland like Glin Castle - Limerick, The Lake Hotel - Killarney, Kinnitty Castle Hotel - Offaly, The Shelbourne Hotel - Dublin and Renvyle House Hotel in rural Galway. I'm sure most of the Ghosts are friendly ones, but it was in Renvyle that Yeats is alleged to have experienced the presence of a teenage ghost, clutching his hands to his throat.

Scaring for a living

undefined

Here's another job for you, how about having fun scaring people for a living? A group of people do just that every night in Dublin. They tell the stories of sinister surgeons, bodysnatchers, ghosts and ghouls. So, if you're a good actor and like dressing up, this could be the perfect job for you!

Phlebotomist

undefined

What about being a Phlebotomist?…Oh yes it involves blood! This is a job that could freak some people out! But if you're not squeamish and you have a Fetac/QQI Level 5 in ANY discipline, you can study for a Diploma in Phlebotomy with Synergie Education.ie. Courses are run in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Athlone & Naas. This could be a great opportunity for someone who is currently working as a health care worker and wants to up skill themselves.

But remember, no matter what you do for a living or fun, the most important thing is NOT TO BE AFRAID OF HARD WORK and it's okay to be a little bit scared sometimes as you move up the ladder…being scared means you're about to do something really, really brave!

Happy Halloween!
