Qualifications:

Candidates must have received a good general education and hold a full clean manual Irish Drivers Licence – Class D1. Candidates must have completed their CPC examinations/modules and must hold the CPC Qualification Card. This must be available at interview.

 

Experience:

Candidates must have adequate training and driving experience to enable them to carry out satisfactorily the duties of the post.

Experience of working with people with an intellectual disability is an advantage.

 

Tenure:

Permanent, part-time and pensionable.

 

It is also proposed to set up a locum panel of Drivers who will be called if and when required to cover for staff on various leave within the Services.

 

Working Hours:

2 x 50 hours per fortnight.

 

Hours will be mainly rostered Monday to Friday. However, weekend and evening work may be required from time to time. The shifts may vary due to the changing needs of the people supported. There is a split-duty requirement which may be best suited to candidates living in the Galway city and adjacent area.

 

The Corlann model of service is based on Personal Outcome Measures requiring employees to be flexible in their working hours to provide a quality service delivery for each individual.

 

 

Annual Leave:

22 days pro-rata per annum.

 

Remuneration:

HSE salary scales - Driver (Patients/Clients Public Roads) salary scale (01/06/2026) - € 36,651 x 8 increments - € 45,939 pro-rata per annum.

 

Probation:

A probationary period of 9 months from the date of appointment applies to the post. The employment may be terminated at any time during the probationary period should the employer find that the appointee is unsuitable to continue employment. The probation period may be extended at the Employer’s discretion.

 

Driving Assessment:

Applicants may be required to undergo a Minibus Driving assessment by an Assessor nominated by Corlann.

 

 

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Corlann model of service is based on Personal Outcome Measures requiring employees to be flexible both in their approach and their working hours to provide a quality service delivery for each individual.

 

Specific Conditions

·        Staff should have a positive attitude towards working with persons with an intellectual disability and help to ensure that they lead as normal and enjoyable a life as possible.

·        Staff should treat each person with an intellectual disability as an individual and at all times acknowledge and respect the rights and personal dignity of the person with an intellectual disability.

·        Staff are required to establish and maintain relationships with adults with disabilities that are based on respect and equality and that promote their independence.

 

Main duties and functions:

·        Attend punctually for duty as and when required in accordance with the duty roster.

·        Perform such driving duties as may be assigned from time to time. This will include:

-      Conveyance of people supported by the Services to and from the Services as required.

-      Conveyance of people supported by the Services to hospital appointments, social outings/activities and other journeys as required.

-      Assistance of people supported by the Services on and off the bus and ensure that health and safety guidelines are followed at all times.

-      Bring Buses for CVRT and NCT checks as required.

-      Transfer of information to parents/guardians/other employees/services in a satisfactory manner.

-      Perform minor maintenance duties in the centres as requested by the team leaders/managers.

-      Collection of furniture and equipment as required.

·        Observe the following procedures at all times when driving:

-      Convey People Supported by the Services to their destination. Any deviation from this policy must be reported to management at the earliest opportunity.

-      Display care, courtesy and attention to passengers being carried.

-      Drive in accordance with the rules of the road and the traffic regulations in force relating to speed, parking, etc.

-      Drive at a safe speed taking into consideration the size and nature of the load and the conditions of the road surface. On no account should undue risks be taken in order to reach a destination on time.

-      Keep your current Driving Licence with you at all times.

-      Be familiar with transport emergency procedures and the Service Policy on driving.

-      In the event of a road traffic accident ensure that the Service Policy is strictly adhered to.

-      Abstain from alcohol while on duty and for at least 10 hours before you commence duty.

·        In addition to driving duties, the person appointed will also be required to perform portering and general operative duties. This will include –

-      Collection & disposal of refuse.

-      Ground maintenance.

·        Keep vehicles in a clean condition and in first class working order, ensure that faults are reported to the Manager and that regular servicing is carried out.

·        Ensure confidentiality of information at all times.

·        Be conscious of Health and Safety matters in the workplace and in particular to comply with Employees’ obligations as set out under Section 9 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005.

·        Be aware of and become familiar with fire drill procedures i.e. fire detection, evacuation and firefighting equipment.

Be aware of and become familiar with safety equipment i.e. clamping of wheelchair and use of lifts.

·        Ensure that any accident to people supported by the Services, staff or third party is reported promptly to the Manager/Programme Manager and ensure policy is adhered too.

·        Become familiar with and adhere to the policies and procedures of the Service.

·        Be willing to participate in all training and recreational activities.

·        Supervise and guide people supported by the Services and attend to their personal training needs as required.

·        Take part in all in-service training courses, both within and outside the Centre, as organised by Management.

·        Perform such other duties appropriate to the post of Driver/Porter as may be assigned from time to time by the Manager. The duties must be carried out in person at all times.

·        BOCSI operates School Transport as a Bus Eireann contractor, all information / documents required by BE must be supplied

·        As the duties and responsibilities of any post in the Services are likely to change with the ongoing needs of the people supported by the Services, i.e. age, level of disability etc., staff are expected to have a high level of flexibility, and a willingness and an ability to develop new approaches to their work as the people supported by the Services’ needs demand.

 

The role of the post holder will not be limited by reference to this job description. It would be expected that the role will evolve as professional, structural and Individuals demands change and the post holder will be expected to demonstrate flexibility skills that will facilitate this.
