Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance Officer

JOB PURPOSE

The post-holder will work under the direction and guidance of the Careers and Learning Resources Manager to ensure effective operation and delivery of a range of Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) services to students, external partners and the general public.

This includes the operation and administration of the following areas:

• Careers Advice

• Careers Education Programme

• Personal Career Planning

• CEIAG Development and Promotion

• Work Related Learning and Skills Development

• Employability Skills Development

• Internal and External Careers Liaison

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

Careers Education Information Advice and Guidance Services

• Identify, implement and evaluate appropriate CEIAG systems to assist curriculum managers in maximising student recruitment, retention and progression.

• Provide careers education and guidance to all full-time and part-time students/trainees.

• Implement career plans for all full-time students in line with the Individual Student Learner Agreement.

• Provide careers education and guidance to individual students/trainees referred to the Guidance and Student Information Centre.

• Assist in the enrolment process, giving advice to prospective students on suitable courses and their availability.

• Inform personal tutors regarding the UCAS/CAO process.

• Maintain contact with agencies able to meet specific needs of students/trainees outside the expertise of the College, including arranging appointments.

• Provide information and guidance to students/trainees on financial support from Education and Library Boards, Training and Employment Agency, Department of Health and Social Services, Student Loans Company.

• Maintain contact with agencies providing financial support, including Education and Library Boards (Awards and Benefits Branch), Department of Health and Social Services (District Offices), Training and Employment Agency and the European Union.

• Provide information on available accommodation for students requiring board and lodgings; maintain a register of such accommodation and an up-to-date record of students’ residences.

• Liaise with and support other College services including Central Admissions, Marketing, Learning Support and Student Services.

• Participate in open days/evenings, careers conventions and other events within and outside the College to encourage progression.

• Assist with administrative duties within the Guidance and Student Information Centre.

• Assist curriculum managers in achieving student recruitment targets by planning CEIAG activities.

• Support the organisation of events including graduation ceremonies, parents' evenings and open days.

• Assist the Careers and Learning Resource Manager in strategy and policy formulation for CEIAG.

• Support the Senior Management Team in promoting CEIAG in the local community.

• Prepare reports, letters and correspondence relating to CEIAG issues.

• Assist with development planning processes within CEIAG sections.

• Develop, implement and maintain effective and efficient policies and procedures.

• Establish effective systems for communicating careers information throughout Southern Regional College.

• Represent the SRC Careers Section and liaise with relevant external bodies.

• Keep up to date with developments in Careers to ensure services meet user needs.

People Management

• Lead and manage staff in the Careers and/or Learning Resource area, acting as line manager for issues such as conduct, discipline, performance management, attendance, staff appraisal and development.

• Ensure effective arrangements for staff development and conduct performance reviews in line with procedures.

• Support effective communication across the College and with stakeholders.

GENERAL

• Participate in the enrolment cover rota.

• Contribute to internal processes for updating the Risk Management Register.

• Undertake work outside normal working hours as required.

• Provide written and oral reports as required.

• Ensure all documentation and authorisation procedures are followed.

• Support the Senior Management Team and sub-committees as required.

• Promote the College’s vision, mission and core values.

The post-holder must adopt a flexible approach to duties and responsibilities. The College periodically reviews job descriptions to ensure they remain aligned with actual duties, and amendments will be agreed following consultation.

Personnel Specification

Applicants must meet the minimum eligibility criteria.

Eligibility Criteria

A Level 4 qualification on the National Qualifications Framework or above in Careers, Advice and Guidance

OR

A minimum of 1 year’s recent experience (within the last five years) in providing a Careers, Education, Information, Advice or Guidance service.

A pass at GCSE English Language or Essential Skills Level 2 Literacy (or equivalent).

A pass at GCSE Mathematics, Essential Skills Level 2 Numeracy, NICATS Access Maths Modules (or equivalent).

Desirable Criteria

Experience working in the Education Sector.

Other Essential Requirement

A full current driving licence valid in Northern Ireland and access to a car for official business. (See application pack for guidance regarding applicants with disabilities.)
