Cardiovascular Disease continues to be the main cause of mortality and morbidity each year in Ireland. The many improvements in medical and surgical treatments have led to increasing numbers of patients surviving acute cardiac events. Heart Failure/Secondary Prevention Programmes are proven to improve quality of life and to reduce morbidity and mortality rates.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNSp) in Heart Failure will deliver a comprehensive Heart Failure Programme to patients over a phased period of time and in accordance with individual patient need. The CNSp plays a vital role in empowering patients with the skills and knowledge necessary for them to achieve optimal health and well being (Duffy et al, 2000). The CNSp will work in collaboration with the Cardiac Team.

The CNSp post holder will deliver care in line with the five core concepts of the role set out in the Framework for the Establishment of Clinical Nurse Specialist Posts, 4th edition, National Council for the Professional Development of Nursing and Midwifery (NCNM) 2008.
