University Hospital Kerry is the third largest of the Health Service Executive – South South West Hospital Group’s nine acute hospitals. UHK is a designated teaching hospital with formal academic links, providing acute general hospital services to the population of Co. Kerry (147,554 CSO 2016 preliminary report) and additionally to proportions of the populations of West Limerick and North Cork bringing core population to circa 170,000. By virtue of the hospital's formal academic affiliation with UCC, the University offers Clinical Lecturer contracts to UHK clinicians who take these students. At the core of University Hospital Kerry’s service is the provision of 24 hour emergency cover on every day of the year. This busy ED has seen a significant increase in attendances over the years with a total of 39,136 attendances in 2022, an increase of over 29% when compared to 2012 attendances of 30,517. Activity across all acute hospitals has increased and 2024 (45469) has seen an increase in activity compared to 2023 (42945).
