Consultant In Emergency Medicine

The Emergency Department (ED) at Regional Hospital Mullingar (RHM) provides 24-hour emergency and urgent care services to adults and children for the population of Longford, Westmeath and surrounding area.

The department is led by Dr Richard Lynch, Dr Sam Kuan and Dr Kamran Shah (Emergency Medicine Consultants) and supported by Dr Frances McCartan (Paediatric Specialist Registrar) and NCHD’s.

The current doctor compliment within the ED is 3 Consultants, 12 Registrars and 8 SHO’s.

Patients attending the Emergency department are triaged using the Manchester triage system and assessed, diagnosed, treated or referred for surgical or medical opinion.

Regional Hospital Mullingar provides services to the population of counties Westmeath and Longford along with parts of counties Offaly, Kildare, Roscommon, Meath and Cavan as a member of CHO8. From the 2022 census the population of Longford stood at 46,634 while Westmeath’s stood at 95,840 while the overall population for the hospitals catchment area showed an increase of just over 11% from 2016 figures. Longford’s population rise was the highest in the country at 14.1% compared to a national average of 7.6%.

There are full departmental meetings and teaching on a weekly basis. The department is recognised for training at both BST and HST levels and also provides training placements for GP trainees.

The post-holder will contribute fully to the functioning of the Emergency Medicine Department at Regional Hospital, Mullingar in all matters including patient care, governance, teaching, resource management and other issues. The post-holder will be responsible for the quality of the delivery of the Emergency Medicine service in the hospital. They will also be responsible for ensuring the highest quality response from the service and will function as an integral part of the multi-disciplinary Emergency Medicine team in clinical and administrative matters, including clinical audit. This post will have a working weekly commitment of 37 hours at Regional Hospital, Mullingar for the purpose of delivery of Consultant in Emergency Medicine services
