JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Cook
Job Duration: Part-time permanent position.
Job Location: The position offered is based in Clarecare’s Over 65’s Club, Hill road, Killaloe V94 NR52 and will from time to time, require some travel to other Clarecare locations.
Work Hours/Days:
18 hours per week on a Tuesday to Thursday basis working from 9.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. daily inclusive of 15 mins break. Flexibility is required regarding your hours of work.
Reporting to: The Cook will report to the Day Centre Manager and work closely with other Day Centre staff e.g. Dining Room Assistants, General/Healthcare Assistants, etc.
Annual Leave Entitlement: 15.5 days per full leave year.
JOB PURPOSE
Working under the guidance of the Day Centre Manager, ensure that the Kitchen is clean and operational. Prepping of food and cooking of meals on a daily basis, for up to 25 clients of the Clarecare’s Over 65’s Club (Day Centre) in Killaloe.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION:
General Responsibilities:·
- To report to the Day Centre Manager in Clarecare or delegate.
- To adhere to Clarecare policies and procedures in relation to your work with Clarecare.
- Ability to maintain the principles of confidentiality in all areas of work.
- To maintain files in accordance with Clarecare standards in order to ensure that good record keeping practices are in place.
- To work as part of the wider Clarecare Structure.
- To support the work of staff, volunteers, students and others involved in Clarecare.
- To attend supervision sessions with your Line Manager.
- To maintain professional boundaries in all work with clients, staff, volunteers, external suppliers, etc.
- To perform such other duties appropriate to the office as may be assigned to you by your Line Manager or designate.
- Attend meetings as relevant.
- Attend all mandatory training as advised by Clarecare.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Excellent presentation skills i.e. report for duty in the correct uniform as required by the Service, paying particular attention to personal hygiene.
- To perform whatever duties the Day Centre Manager assigns to you relative to the position.
- To provide the Day Centre Manager with the months meal plan and have meetings regarding planning the ordering of produce.
- To be familiar with the menu of the day/week and know your responsibilities in accordance with the menu.
- Washing, peeling, chopping, cutting and cooking foodstuffs and preparing salads, hot meals, and desserts in line with food hygiene regulations e.g. HACCP forcirca 25 persons per day.
- To assist with serving food.
- To maintain the highest level of sanitation in the kitchen - ensuring the food preparation areas are clean and hygienic - washing kitchen appliances, worksurfaces, floors and walls.
- To provide and supervise wash-up services in the kitchen ensuring that all pots, pans, cooking utensils, crockery, cutlery, glassware and any other kitchenequipment is washed, dried and stored correctly and neatly.
- Supervise and participate in maintenance of the kitchen area to include all areas mentioned above, sweeping/mopping floors, hose out food and bottle bins,emptying bins when full etc.
- Using a variety of kitchen equipment such as mixers, special knives and cutters safely.
- Responsible for deliveries and organising the storeroom/ Fridges/Freezers - sorting, storing and distributing ingredients.
- Responsible for organising and carrying out the deep cleaning of the Kitchen and Dining room areas in accordance with HACCP Food Safety/Covid-19measures/environmental health guidelines/general sanitisation guidelines.
- The Kitchen working environment will often be hot, busy and noisy. You must have the ability to work in such an environment.
- Notify Dining Room staff/ HCA’s of the Allergens in the daily menu
- Responsible for recording and retaining food temperature and allergen details daily.
- Organising linen laundry.
- To set up workstations with the necessary ingredients and cooking equipment.
- To ensure all food and other items are stored properly.
- Report any defects on items delivered immediately to the Day Centre Manager or designate.
- Assess the condition of food / stock takes.
- To wear personal protective equipment when cleaning windows/canopies/walls or segregating bottles/cardboard or working in the grounds area.
- Ensure all kitchen work areas are free from rubbish and are swept and cleaned daily/weekly.
- Ability to listen and carry out tasks quickly and competently
- Ability to understand instructions quickly and follow them closely
- To Ensure All HACCP Paperwork and logs are correctly filled in, signed and dated.

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION:
Essential Requirements:
- Minimum of 1 years’ experience of food/meal planning & preparation of meals to a high standard, for groups of up to 25 clients with varying dietaryrequirements.
- Have obtained such a standard of education as to enable him/her discharge the duties of the post satisfactorily.
- A keen interest in, and a passion for, high quality food preparation, cooking and presentation of nourishing meals.
- Ability to work and interact with older people in a professional capacity on a daily basis with a keen understanding of their needs.
- Excellent time keeping, communication, organisation and interpersonal skills with the ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team in a fast-pacedworking environment.
- A positive ‘fit to work’ medical.
- A positive Garda Vetting Disclosure through Clarecare.
- Two positive written references from your current and most recent employer.
Desirable:
- Culinary Skills course/training.
- Ideally have HACCP completed - or willing to complete.
- Knowledge of Catering equipment would be an advantage.
- A knowledge of the work & ethos of Clarecare.
- Interest in the issues arising for older people and a desire to work with older people.
- Valid Manual Handling completed - or willing to complete.
- FETAC Level 5 qualification in Care of the Older Person and/or Care Skills.·
- Full driving licence.
Gross Salary & Benefits:
- The maximum pro-rated salary on offer (commensurate with experience) for this part-time, permanent 18hours per week position is €12,949.37 gross perannum (i.e. €13.83 gross per hour worked) which is subject to the normal statutory deductions i.e. PAYE/PRSI/USC and paid monthly into a nominated bankaccount.
