The Role

Mayo County Council is inviting applications from suitably qualified persons for the position of Craftworker Carpenter.

The Carpenter will be primarily responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the Housing Stock owned by Mayo County Council. He / she will be responsible for carrying out tasks assigned appropriate to his / her trade, and other types of minor repairs and inspections, to a high standard and on time.

Each Candidate must, on the latest date for receipt of completed application forms:

a)     Have a good standard of general education.

b)     Hold a National Craft Certificate in carpentry or equivalent and have extensive experience in carpentry.

c)     Possess good organisational skills.

d)     A minimum of 1 year experience in carpentry and joinery works following successful completion of apprenticeship.

e)     Hold a current unendorsed Class B Driving Licence

It is desirable that the successful candidate demonstrates the following through the completion of their application form and at interview,

a)     have had a public facing role in the past

b)     Have a good working knowledge of the relevant parts of the Building Regulations.

Candidates must, by the date of any job offer, be:

a)     A citizen of the European Economic Area (EEA). The EEA consists of the Member States of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway; or

A panel will be formed from qualified candidates from which permanent and temporary appointments may be made. This is a pensionable whole-time position on the basis of a 39-hour 5-day week. The role may include occasional evening and weekend work.

The salary shall be fully inclusive and shall be

 as determined from time to time. The holder of the position shall pay to the Local Authority any fees or other monies (other than inclusive salary) payable to or received by such holder by virtue of the position or in respect of services, which are required by or under any enactment to perform.

SALARY SCALE:

€796.52 - €819.00 - €873.02 - €878.62 - €884.11 - €889.68 - €895.22 - €900.77 - €906.31- €911.87 - €917.38.

The starting pay for new entrants will be at the minimum of the scale and the rate of remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government pay policy.

3. 

The duties of the post are to give to the local authority, and 

a)     such other local authorities or bodies for which the Chief Executive, for the purposes of the Local Government Acts 2001 and 2014, is Chief Executive, and

b)     to any other local authority or body with which an agreement has been made by the local authority, or by any of the authorities or bodies mentioned in subparagraph (a) of this paragraph under the general direction and supervision of the Chief Executive or such other employee as the Chief Executive may from time to time determine, such appropriate services of an executive, administrative or management nature as may be required by any local authority or body hereinbefore mentioned in the exercise and performance of any of its powers, functions and duties to exercise such powers, functions and duties as may be delegated to him / her by the Chief Executive from time to time, including the duty of servicing all committees that may be established by any such local authority or body. The post holder will, if required, act for an employee of a higher level if qualified to do so.

The following are among the principal duties envisaged:

a)     The successful candidate will be required to carry out all the duties assigned to him/her by the Council through its management and supervisory staff, relative to the repair and maintenance of the Council’s dwellings and buildings, and related services and any other such duties that may be assigned to him/her from time to time

b)     The successful candidate will play an important role the housing maintenance function of Mayo County Council.

c)     Flexibility to adapt and work between multiple work locations associated with preventative and reactive emergency repair requests.

d)     Work with minimal supervision as part of a larger team throughout County Mayo.

e)     Be flexible in terms of location, nature of role and working within the County as required by line management.

f)      Partake in ongoing training and development which will form a core part of the post.

g)     The successful candidate will be required to drive such council transport as required

h)     Perform such duties and carry out such instructions as may be given from time to time by the Senior Engineer or other nominated persons.

Candidates for the post must demonstrate that they have competency and skills in the following areas. Application forms should include two practical examples which demonstrates these competencies. Interviews will be competency based and marks will be awarded under these skills sets.

Persons who become pensionable employees of a local authority under the Local Government (superannuation) (consolidation) scheme, 1998 may be required to contribute to the Dependants Pension Scheme.

CLASS A PRSI

Offer of employment may be subject to a Garda vetting process. Failure to pass Garda vetting will result in employment being terminated with immediate effect.

Any attempt by a candidate (or by any persons acting on their behalf) to canvass or other otherwise influence any officer of the Council (or persons nominated by it to interview or examine applicants) in the candidates’ favour either directly or indirectly, by means of written communication or otherwise, will automatically disqualify the applicant for consideration for the position.
