Candidate Criteria:
Qualifications
- Hold a Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualification.
- A QQI/FETAC Level 5 qualification in Health Service Skills or Healthcare Support is desirable.
Experience
- Proven experience in Decontamination or Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) is essential.
- Proficient in the use of information technology and relevant systems.
- Strong ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Excellent organisational and time management skills.
- Committed to following all health and safety protocols in line with hospital policies.
The Purpose of This Role:
As a CSSD Operative, you will be crucial in the sterilisation and preparation of medical instruments used throughout the hospital. Your attention to detail will ensure the highest quality standards in infection control and patient safety.
Key Responsibilities to include, but not limited to
- Collect and transport used surgical instruments and equipment.
- Clean, decontaminate, inspect, and sterilise instruments using manual and mechanical methods.
- Check instruments for defects or faults and report discrepancies promptly.
- Package and label sterile sets for theatres, wards, and clinics.
- Maintain cleanliness of CSSD work areas and equipment.
- Handle waste disposal and segregation following hospital policies.
- Manage stock levels and replace supplies as needed.
- Maintain accurate records in line with hospital protocols.
- Adhere strictly to Health & Safety, infection control, and hygiene policies.
- Become a member of the Irish decontamination institute.

Due to the specialised nature of this role, candidates must have proven experience working in a hospital CSSD or a healthcare-related decontamination environment. This includes areas such as hospital sterile services, endoscopy reprocessing units, dental sterilisation rooms, or other medical device reprocessing facilities following healthcare infection control standards.
