Detailer (Steel)
Job Description: Steel Detailer
Pay: £45,000 - £60,000 per year
Location: Derry City (office‑based)
Reports To: Detailing Manager / Technical Manager / Engineering Manager
Role Overview
The Steel Detailer is responsible for producing accurate, fully coordinated structural steel fabrication and erection drawings from engineers’ design information. The role supports fabrication, procurement, and site erection by ensuring steelwork is detailed efficiently, safely, and in accordance with contract requirements, standards, and project programmes.
Key Responsibilities
Detailing & Modelling
- Produce detailed structural steel drawings and 3D models for:
- Structural frames
- Beams, columns, and bracing
- Connections
- Stairs, handrails, and miscellaneous steel
- Develop accurate Tekla Structures (or similar BIM) models
- Prepare:
- Fabrication drawings
- Erection drawings
- Bolt lists and material schedules
- Ensure detailing complies with:
- Engineer’s design intent
- Project specifications
- Fabrication and erection best practice
Coordination & Collaboration
- Liaise with:
- Structural engineers
- Fabrication supervisors
- Steel erectors
- Project managers
- Coordinate steel models with:
- Concrete, cladding, MEP, and architectural elements
- Attend coordination and clash detection meetings where required
- Incorporate design changes and RFIs efficiently
Technical Compliance
- Apply relevant standards including:
- Eurocodes
- EN & NSAI standards
- CE Marking requirements for structural steel
- Detail safe, buildable steel connections and interfaces
- Ensure bolt grades, tolerances, coatings, and welds are correctly specified
Project Support
- Respond to fabrication and site queries
- Revise drawings in line with site feedback or design updates
- Support procurement with material quantities
- Assist with as‑built documentation at project completion
Key Skills & Experience
Essential
- Proven experience as a Structural Steel Detailer
- Proficiency in Tekla Structures (or equivalent steel detailing software)
- Strong ability to read and interpret structural engineering drawings
- Understanding of:
- Structural steel fabrication processes
- Erection sequencing and buildability
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail
- Good time management and ability to meet deadlines
Desirable
- Experience on Irish or UK steel projects
- Familiarity with:
- BIM coordination workflows
- Clash detection and model sharing
- BCAR documentation
- Previous fabrication shop or site experience
- Knowledge of connection design principles (engineer‑designed or in‑house)
Qualifications
- Degree or diploma in:
- Engineering
- Architectural Technology
- Construction Technology
- BIM or CAD
(or equivalent industry experience)
