The Irish Times wishes to appoint a Digital Sports Journalist. In this role you will be an integral member of the digital sports team, working primarily online under the direction of the Sports Editor.

Job Purpose: To work as an effective member of the digital sports team and contribute to journalistic output under the direction of your Department Editor.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Work as a digital journalist based in Sports, operating primarily online. Occasionally, you may be required to work in other areas as assigned by your department editor.
  • Work quickly, accurately, and efficiently under deadline pressures. High-speed production and delivery of quality online breaking sports content is essential.
  • Handle a variety of tasks associated with online production, including sub-editing, updating ongoing stories, and producing galleries, videos, audio recordings, and other multimedia content.
  • Carry out a broad range of digital production roles, as directed by the Sports Editor or Deputy Sports Editor, including morning, evening, night, and weekend shifts.
  • Suggest story ideas and developments for online and/or print platforms.
  • Propose enhancements to irishtimes.com online sports content.
  • Develop strategies to drive traffic and engagement with irishtimes.com content through social sharing.
  • Participate in training programmes as required.
  • Demonstrate good communication skills, flexibility, and the ability to work with the latest technologies as part of a multi-skilled team.
  • Act as an ambassador for the introduction of new technology in a multimedia environment.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships within the editorial team and with colleagues across the organisation.
  • Contribute to sports podcasts.
  • Involvement in live coverage of sports events.

Other Occasional or Additional Duties:

  • Fill in for absent colleagues as required
  • Any other duties as required by the Sports Editor.
