Farranlea Road Community Nursing Unit (FCNU) is a designated centre registered with the HIQA, providing a comprehensive 24-hour continuing care service for older people and individuals under 65 years of age with complex chronic care needs. The centre has 85 registered beds in use, comprising 75 beds providing care for older people and 10 beds supporting people under 65 years of age with chronic disease and complex care needs.

The service provides comprehensive continuing nursing care, specialised rehabilitation, supportive and palliative care, with a strong focus on promoting residents’ dignity, independence, quality of life, wellbeing and individual rights. Care is delivered by a multidisciplinary team of highly trained and appropriately qualified personnel, supported by robust clinical governance, quality, and risk-management and safeguarding processes. The safeguarding and protection of residents is a fundamental priority within the service, with a strong commitment to promoting residents’ safety, dignity, autonomy and right to live free from abuse, neglect, discrimination or harm.

FCNU recognises each resident as a unique individual and respects their will, wishes, choices, beliefs and preferences at all times, ensuring these are reflected in their care and daily lives. The service works collaboratively with residents, their families, advocates and relevant health and social care professionals to promote person-centred care, continuity of care and positive outcomes. As a HIQA-registered designated centre, FCNU remains committed to delivering safe, high-quality and compassionate care within an environment that promotes respect, inclusion, accountability and the protection of every resident.

Six Health Regions have been established within the HSE, on the basis of the geographical boundaries agreed by the Government in July 2019 and they will be operational from 2024.

Each Health Region will be tasked with population specific planning resourcing and delivery of health and social care services for the needs of its unique population. This will result in improved accountability and governance in terms of finance and performance, while also bringing decision-making closer to the frontline.

Health Regions will enable and empower staff to provide services that are:

• Integrated, locally planned and delivered

• Easier to access and navigate

• Available closer to home

Health Regions are geographically based units with clearly defined populations. They align community and hospital services within specific areas. The HSE will retain a strong but leaner central organisation, with more service provision developed at a local level.

The HSE South West health region will manage and deliver all public health and social care services in Cork and Kerry. HSE South West includes all hospital and community healthcare services in the region.

The Department of Population and Public Health is also now aligned with this health region

South / South West Hospital Group and Cork Kerry Community Healthcare became part of HSE South West health region on 3rd March 2025 and the transition to the new structures will continue throughout 2026.

Purpose of the Post

The Director of Nursing, Assistant is a trained health professional, in this case senior nurse that helps to manage a patient's care journey.

· To provide professional / clinical leadership in the designated area(s) of responsibility.

· To assist in the delivery of a high level of effective clinical care and support to residents in a residential care setting

· To oversee the management of resources including staffing and staff development.

· To facilitate communication across the healthcare teams (meetings , committee work, professional development planning)

· Managing and developing nurse education and training.

· The position requires a strategic approach to the development of services and structures while engaging with continuous quality improvement.

· Management of change to comply with HIQA standards and National Standards for Resident safety.

· Auditing to ensure quality assurance in the service in line with best practice.

· Management of human and financial resources within defined limits.

· Cover for the Director of Nursing Role as required.

The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) will work closely with the Director of Nursing (DON) in managing, developing and evaluating the nursing service in accordance with regional and national policies and strategies.

The post holder is primarily responsible for the provision of a high quality and safe nursing service. This will involve professional leadership to nursing staff at all levels, providing professional advice, ensuring achievement of operational and strategic objectives and proactively developing nursing roles in accordance with the needs of the patients.

They will operationalise the core values of nursing by ensuring the patient experience is of the highest possible standard at all times with particular emphasis on dignity, kindness and compassion.within the wider team
