Undergraduates successful at interview will remain dormant on the panel until such time as evidence of registration with the Nursing Midwifery Board Ireland (NMBI) in the Division of Psychiatric Nursing has been received.

Details of Service

Dublin & Midlands includes the former Dublin West/South West Mental Health Service (Loman’s / Tallaght), the Dublin South City Mental Health Service (St James’s), Kildare West Wicklow Mental Health Services and the Midlands Mental Health Service. Serving a total population of well over 1,000,000 people. The service also includes Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).

The Dublin South Central service is committed to providing progressive high standards of recovery-based nursing care to clients with a wide range of mental health issues which range from basic to complex, severe psychiatric care needs. Services include Adult, Older Adult, and Psychiatry of Later Life, ID with a Mental Health Diagnosis and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).

The general adult mental health services in the former Dublin West/South West Mental Health Service (Tallaght) are largely community-oriented with an emphasis on delivering care in the community and have well developed community mental health teams CMHT). A sector-based approach is adopted consisting of a Community Mental Health Teams, Day Hospital, Day Centre, Home Based Treatment Teams and a service wide response to First Episode Psychosis. Rehabilitation services, Assertive Outreach and Psychiatry of Later Life are also in operation throughout the service. The in-patient unit is an Approved Centre under the Mental Health Act 2001 and is located in Tallaght Hospital.

The Dublin South City Service at St. James’s Hospital delivers both specialist inpatient (Jonathan Swift Clinic (Fownes and Beckett Wards and Conolly Norman Unit) and a psychiatric liaison service for the elderly in St. James’s Hospital) and community (Community Mental Health Teams, a day hospital, a community support and connection service, Homeless Teams, Old Age Psychiatry, a rehabilitation and recovery service and community residences and a clozapine clinic) services. Our service covers parts of Dublin 6W, Dublin 8, Dublin 12, Dublin 14 and Dublin 16.

Kildare West Wicklow mental health service (KWWMHS) has 7 community mental health teams, including South Kildare, Mid-West Kildare, Mid-East Kildare, North-West Kildare, Mid-North Kildare and North –East Kildare. KWWMHS has a Rehab & Recovery team, Psychiatry of Later Life (PLL) team, MHID, Homecare and Self Harm service. The approved centre Lakeview is located in Naas General Hospital and includes a therapy and clozapine department.

Linn Dara Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) delivers specialist outpatient services in the areas of South West inner Dublin City, West Dublin, all of County Kildare and West Wicklow. Linn Dara CAMHS delivers specialist services via Community Eating Disorder Team, CAMHS-Intellectual Disability Teams, Consultation Liaison Psychiatry Team at CHI@Tallaght and various pathways in ADHD, Family Therapy and DBT. Linn Dara Approved Centre is the largest and busiest in-patient CAMHS inpatient unit in the country, providing services to a local catchment population of 702,674. The unit covers Dublin South and West, Dun Laoghaire, Kildare, Wicklow, Laois, Offaly, Longford and Westmeath. The Approved Centre works on a national basis when the need arises.

Midlands Mental Health Service (MMHS) serves the population of Westmeath, Longford, Laois and Offaly and is the largest IHA in the region both from a population and geographical perspective. The Midlands Mental Health Services consist of Four Approved Centres that cater for the in-patient needs of the adult population. Community services consist of 10 GA Community Mental Health Teams and specialist community mental health teams that provide targeted supports to patients that range from 6 years of age to those at end of life who are attached to the Psychiatry of Later Life teams. The Midland MHS will offer career progression opportunities in both clinical and management roles.

Mental Health Services offer more rewarding nursing career opportunities than you may be aware of. Our nurse led services allow extensive opportunities to fully engage in the delivery of holistic quality care, working with many other health care professionals such as Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Behavioural Therapists, Counsellors, Occupational Therapists, GP’s, Social Workers, to ensure the best outcomes for service users and residents.

Mental Health Services actively encourage and support continual professional development as well as extensive access to rewarding career pathways. Nurses with experience qualify to apply for a variety of promotional managerial roles such as Clinical Nurse Manager, while those seeking specialist pathways can develop within roles such as Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Prescriber, Clinical Nurse Specialist roles and more. We currently have 9 ANPs in the service with plans to develop more posts in line with service need and government policy. Nurses joining a Mental Health Service are fully supported, mentored and clinical supervision is offered.
