Details of Service:

Senior Medical Officers in Community Medicine (also known as Community Medical Doctors or CMDs) work within Community Healthcare Organisation with the Principal Medical Officer and other CMDs, with Public Health Nursing, GPs, Health &Social Care Professionals, audiology services, ophthalmology services, disability services, PCRS and the National Immunisation Office.

The CMD provides non-acute 2nd tier child health clinics in the community as part of the National Healthy Childhood Programme. Referrals are received from Public Health Nurses mostly, and from Health & Social Care Professionals, parents and GPs.

The CMD may be involved in the delivery of the School Immunisation Programme in school and clinic settings.

The CMD may be involved in the medical assessment for eligibility for the Primary Medical Certificate required to avail of the Disabled Drivers and Passengers Tax Scheme and provide medical input into schemes administered by the HSE.

The CMD may also provide targeted health screening and vaccine services to socially excluded groups such those applying for International Protection e.g. programme refugee/asylum seekers.
