Driver/Porter
Cregoran Services is a progressive, dynamic and developing service located in and around Claregalway, Co. Galway. Cregoran provides a variety of residential, day and respite services to adults with intellectual disabilities who have very high support needs, grounded in the use of personal outcome measures.

Qualifications/Experience:
· Candidates must have received a good general education and hold a full clean Driver’s
Licence – Class D1 is an advantage.
· Candidates must have completed their CPC examinations/modules and must hold the CPC Qualification Card. This must be produced and checked at the interview.
· The successful candidate must have adequate training and driving experience to enable them to carry out satisfactorily the duties of the post and ideally have some experience of working with people with an intellectual disability.
· Experience in general maintenance provision is an advantage.
Working Hours:
50 hours a fortnight based on a 5 day week duty roster. Contracted hours of work are liable to change between the hours of 7am - 7pm to meet Service needs. You may also be required to work weekends and public holidays as service needs require.
The Brothers of Charity model of service is based on Personal Outcome Measures requiring employees to be flexible in their working hours to provide a quality service delivery for each individual.
Annual Leave:
22 days pro rata per annum.
Remuneration:
Department of Health Driver (Patients Public Roads) salary scale (01/03/2025) - €35,434 x 8 increments to €44,539 pro rata per annum.
Tenure:
This post is permanent part-time and pensionable.
Probation:
A probationary period of nine months from the date of appointment applies to the post. The
employment may be terminated at any time during the probationary period should the employer find that the appointee is unsuitable to continue employment. The probation period may be extended at the Employer’s discretion.
Driving Assessment:
Applicants may be required to undergo a Minibus Driving assessment by an Assessor nominated by the Brothers of Charity Services
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Brothers of Charity model of service is based on Personal Outcome Measures requiring employees to be flexible both in their approach and their working hours to provide a quality service delivery for each individual.
Specific Conditions- Staff should have a positive attitude towards working with persons with an intellectual disability and help to ensure that they lead as normal and enjoyable a life as possible.
- Staff should treat each person with an intellectual disability as an individual and at all times acknowledge and respect the rights and personal dignity of the person with an intellectual disability.
- Staff are required to establish and maintain relationships with adults with disabilities that are based on respect and equality and that promote their independence.
Main duties and functions:
DRIVING:
· Attend punctually for duty as and when required in accordance with the duty roster.
· Perform such driving duties as may be assigned from time to time. This will include:
- Conveyance of persons supported to and from the Services as required.
- Conveyance of persons supported to hospital appointments, social outings/activities and other journeys as required.
- Ensure safe practice when supporting persons supported getting on and off bus.
- Delivery and collection of internal and external mail, hospital specimens, as required.
- Collection of furniture and equipment as required.
- Observe the following procedures at all times when driving:
- Will convey persons supported to their destination. Any deviation from this policy must be reported to management at the earliest opportunity.
- Display care, courtesy and attention to passengers being carried.
- Drive in accordance with the rules of the road and the traffic regulations in force relating to speed, parking, etc.
- Drive at a safe speed taking into consideration the size and nature of the load and the conditions of the road surface. On no account should undue risks be taken in order to reach a destination on time.
- Keep your current Driving Licence with you at all times.
- Be familiar with transport emergency procedures and the Service Policy on driving.
- In the event of a road traffic accident ensure that the Service Policy is strictly adhered to.
PORTER/MAINTENANCE DUTIES:
· In addition to driving duties, the person appointed will also be required to perform maintenance and general operative duties. This will include –
- Taking responsibility for the maintenance/upkeep of all the vehicles within the BEO Services.
- Carryout routine checklist audits on transport vehicles for BEO Services.
- Bring vehicles to and from NCT inspections or mechanical repair shops as required.
- General maintenance works within the BEO Services.
- Maintenance and upkeep of grounds within the services
- General painting/cleaning duties as required throughout the service
- General DIY duties as required throughout the service
- Assisting the tradesmen when required
GENERAL DUTIES:
- Abstain from alcohol while on duty and for at least 10 hours before you are due to come on duty.
- Keep records as required.
- Keep vehicles in a clean condition and in first class working order and ensure that faults are reported to the Area Manager/Service Coordinator and that regular servicing is carried out.
- Ensure confidentiality of information at all times.
- Be conscious of Health and Safety matters in the workplace and in particular to comply with Employees’ obligations as set out under Section 9 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005.
- Be aware of and become familiar with fire drill procedures in buildings i.e. fire detection, evacuation and firefighting equipment.
- Ensure that any accident to persons supported, staff or third party is reported promptly to the Team Leader/Service Coordinator/Area Manager and ensure policy is adhered too.
- Become familiar with and adhere to the policies and procedures of the Service.
- Be willing to participate in all training and recreational activities.
- Supervise and guide persons supported and attend to their personal training needs as required.
- Ensure the service operating in line with the Health Information and Quality Authority Standards (HIQA).
- Take part in all in-service training courses, both within and outside the Centre, as organised by Management.
- Perform such other duties appropriate to the post of Driver/Maintenance as may be assigned from time to time by the Area Manager/Service Coordinator.
- The duties must be carried out in person at all times.
- As the duties and responsibilities of any post in the Centre are likely to change with the ongoing needs of the persons supported, i.e. age, level of disability etc., staff are expected to have a high level of flexibility, and a willingness and an ability to develop new approaches to their work as the persons supported needs demand.
The role of the post holder will not be limited by reference to this job description. It would be expected that the role will evolve as professional, structural and people we support demands and the post holder will be expected to demonstrate flexibility skills that will facilitate this.
