Environmental Education Officer
Salary: Scale SO1, SCP 25 – 27, £36,363 - £38,220 per annum
Hours: 37 hours per week. Monday – Friday 9.00 am – 5.00 pm. A flexible working hours scheme in operation. The postholder may be required to work additional hours and outside normal working hours including early mornings, evenings, weekends to meet the needs of the post.
Duration: Permanent
The Council may retain a list of successful reserve candidates arising from this recruitment for any vacancies which may arise which are the same grade and similar duties. Such a reserve list will be compiled and held for a period of 12 months from the date of interview.

JOB PURPOSE
The postholder will develop, deliver and monitor the Council Environmental initiatives and to promote and develop educational awareness and sustainability development programmes.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Promote the Council’s Waste Management Strategy and recycling schemes with the objective of achieving the maximum recycling targets and continuous improvement.
Provide guidance and advice to the public to ensure that the Council’s Recycling Points are utilised to the maximum potential.
Be involved in the monitoring of recyclables from the household waste stream, thus ensuring maximum returns.
Assist in implementing and promoting Council strategy, policies, targets and action plans for waste minimisation, reuse and recovery, interlinking sustainable development programmes, including ISO 140001.
Process compliance and dissemination of all current and forthcoming Government and EU policy and legislation with respect to waste minimisation, recycling and sustainable development with a view to assessing the impact upon the operation of current and future Council programmes.
Assist in the implementation of operational changes and improvements within the service and council.
Maintain and engage with service providers, contractors, internal and external stakeholders etc. to ensuring an effective and efficient service is provided to meet the Council’s requirements and to ensure their conformance to waste management licensing, duty of care regulations and environmental and sustainable policies.
Assist in developing programmes and be responsible for delivering talks, presentations and promotional work within local schools, businesses, community groups and others, in relation to waste and sustainability.
Support the waste and recycling unit with funding applications, communications and other operational needs of the service.
Undertake Environmental Management audits to ensure environmental compliance and instigate remedial actions.
Investigate complaints and enquiries from the public, schools and others relating to the service area and provide remedial action.
Assist in Council Environmental Campaigns to network, initiate and co-ordinate a programme of activities which engages schools, businesses and the community sector in waste reduction, recycling and sustainable development.
Assist in key actions in respect of waste minimisation detailed within the Council’s Waste Management Plan ensuring they are implemented and progressed with a view to identifying partnership opportunities which will assist with the delivery of the Waste Management Plan and other Council policies.
Undertake survey work in relation to data collection to aid in Council strategies.
Promote a positive approach to Equal Opportunities and ensure that the Council’s Equal Opportunities policies and procedures are adhered to by staff for which the post holder will have responsibility.
Represent the Council at relevant meetings and seminars.
Assist with the maintenance and updating of the service app and other software as necessary.
Undertake any other relevant duties that may be required and are commensurate with the nature and grade of the post.
Qualifications and Training
• Third level qualification (i.e. HNC/HND, Level 4, Degree) in line with the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) in a relevant discipline/subject such as Environmental Management.
(Please note relevancy should be clearly demonstrated).
Experience
• One year’s experience to include:
▪ Working in the waste industry;
▪ Designing and delivering information sessions for a variety of groups;
▪ Dealing with the public in relation to service provision.
Key Skills and Attributes
• Have excellent communication skills to encourage and influence stakeholders to achieve team objectives.
• Ability to work to deadlines and under pressure for a variety of duties.
• Ability to develop, promote and implement new initiatives.
Driving Requirements
• Hold a full current driving licence (valid in the UK) and have access to a form of transport or have access to a form of transport which will permit the applicant to carry out the duties of the post in full.
