Gallery Facilities Operative
Limerick City and County Council invites applications from suitably qualified persons who wish to be considered for inclusion on a panel from which temporary and permanent vacancies for Gallery Facilities Operative may be filled throughout the lifetime of the panel.
Limerick City Gallery of Art (LCGA) is the principal visual arts institution in Limerick, serving the city, county and wider region. In addition to the contemporary exhibition programme, LCGA is also home to a Permanent Collection comprising circa 1,000 works. LCGA welcomes approximately 90,000 visitors annually.
The PositionThis is a key position within the organisation and requires a motivated, well-presented individual with a broad range of experience to carry out a range of duties. The duties listed below are non-exhaustive and may be altered from time to time depending on the needs of the organisation.
Duties of the Gallery Facilities Operative may include, but will not be limited to:1. SecurityResponsible for opening and closing the gallery in line with LCGA protocols
Handling and monitoring of alarm and security systems, alarm call-out duties, and the routine operation of CCTV as required
Reporting and documenting all incidents as per Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) policy
Supporting the LCGA team in dealing with instances of anti-social or aggressive behaviour in accordance with LCCC policies
Undertake Fire Warden and First Aid duties
Ensuring that all areas in the venue are safe and secure for the public at all times
Responsible for the internal maintenance of the building and liaising with outside contractors and LCCC departments as required
Carrying out and liaising with outside contractors for any basic repairs, maintenance and cleaning as may be required from time to time, including checking plant, equipment, and making safe any damaged fixtures or fittings
Maintain all Gallery areas in good order, including external cleaning duties, recycling and refuse coordination, and toilet checklists as required
Ensure that all public areas of the building are maintained to the highest standard ensuring the safety of those working and visiting the venue
Maintain a register of equipment and ensure that it is in good working order, regularly inspected and properly maintained in line with LCCC policies
Responsibility for Health and Safety issues including monitoring and maintenance of equipment
Assisting with monthly Health & Safety inspections and reports in line with LCCC policies
Maintain and update all manuals in line with LCCC procedures
Responsible for Emergency Evacuation procedures at LCGA
Set up rooms for workshops, meetings, events, etc., as required
Welcome visitors and deal with general enquiries in person, by phone or email
Liaise with supervisors at Umbrella Project (Community Employment Scheme) as required
Prepare monthly rota for Gallery Assistants
Ensure that Gallery Assistants adhere to reception protocol as agreed
Assist with the installation of exhibitions as required
Assist with preparations for exhibitions including painting of galleries and fabrication of plinths, etc.
Pack and prepare artworks for transport as required
Liaise with appropriate personnel on transport requirements
Carry out condition reports of artworks where necessary
Monitor and install audio visual equipment as required
Work closely with LCGA personnel to ensure that the exhibition programme and the Permanent Collection is maintained to the standards set out by the Museums Standard Programme of Ireland
Candidates shall be of good character.
2. HealthCandidates shall be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.
Candidates will demonstrate through their application and at interview that they have/are:EssentialHave reached a standard of education sufficient to enable them to carry out the duties assigned to them satisfactorily
Have prior working experience of similar type duties to those specified
Ability to contribute to, and be part of, a small team
Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills
Self-motivated with a record of demonstrating initiative and achievement in a workplace environment
Good IT skills
3 years’ work experience in a similar environment
Experience of art handling
Hold a current, full category B driver’s licence and have access to own car
Hold a valid Private Security Authority Licence
Subject to the availability of suitably qualified candidates, a panel will be formed for an initial period of one year. This may be extended for a further year at the discretion of the Director General. The panel may be used by Limerick City and County Council to fill permanent positions that may arise for its duration. Vacancies will be offered in order of merit as per the panel.
2. Annual LeaveThe successful candidate will have 25 days annual leave (inclusive of Good Friday).
3. SalaryWage Scale: €1,528.66 – €1,577.46 per fortnight. Payment of increments is dependent on satisfactory performance. Entry point of this scale will be determined in accordance with Circulars issued by the Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage. In accordance with Departmental Circular letter EL 02/2011, a person who is not a serving local authority employee on or after 1st January 2011, will enter the scale for the position at the minimum point (€1,528.66 per fortnight).
4. LocationLimerick City Gallery of Art, Pery Square, Limerick. You may be required to work in any premises in use now or in the future by the Council or other authorities for which the Director General is responsible. The Council reserves the right to re-assign you to any office/premises in use by the Council in the course of your employment and alter your base accordingly.
5. Hours of WorkThe working hours currently provide for a five-day, thirty-nine hour working week, from Tuesday to Saturday. Hours may vary from time to time. The position requires flexibility in terms of working hours as the duties will involve working outside of normal hours as required, including weekends, evenings, nights, bank holidays, etc.
6. Sick LeaveThe terms of the Public Service Sick Pay Scheme will prevail.
7. SuperannuationThe Local Government Superannuation Scheme applies.
8. TravelHolders of the post should hold a full driving licence for class B vehicles and shall be required to drive a motor car in the course of their duties. They must provide and maintain a car to the satisfaction of the local authority. Travelling and subsistence expenses incurred in the course of official duties will be refunded in line with Department Circulars and Local Authority policies. Limerick City and County Council, as employer, must be indemnified on your insurance policy. If during your employment, your licence is revoked (even temporarily) or receives endorsements which may affect your duties, you must notify the Council immediately.
9. ResidenceThe holder of the post shall reside in the district in which their duties are to be performed or within a reasonable distance thereof.
10. Safety and WelfareThe holder of the post shall cooperate with the terms of Limerick City and County Council’s Safety Statement and Major Emergency Plan. The successful candidate shall make themselves aware of the safety rules and procedures and make proper use of all safety clothing and equipment.
11. TrainingIt is a condition of employment that successful candidates participate in training programmes relevant to the skills necessary for the performance of the duties attaching to the post.
12. Taking Up AppointmentThe local authority shall require a person to whom an appointment is offered to take up such appointment within a period of four weeks. Failure to do so within such period, or any longer period determined at the discretion of the local authority, may result in the offer being withdrawn.
13. Garda VettingThe National Vetting Bureau (Children and Vulnerable Persons) Act 2012 to 2016 requires that any work or activity which regularly involves access to or contact with children or vulnerable persons will be subject to Garda Vetting.
14. ProbationFor those not already permanent local authority employees:
There shall be a probationary period as determined by the Director General, which may be extended.
The person shall cease to hold the post at the end of this period unless certified satisfactory.
Candidates must, by the date of any job offer, be: (a) A citizen of the EEA (EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), or (b) A citizen of the United Kingdom, or (c) A citizen of Switzerland under the EU-Swiss agreement, or (d) A non-EEA spouse/child of an EEA/UK/Swiss citizen with a stamp 4 visa, or (e) A person awarded international protection under the International Protection Act 2015 (or family member with stamp 4 visa), or (f) A non-EEA parent of a dependent child who is an EEA/UK/Swiss citizen residing in the EEA and has a stamp 4 visa.
