REPORTS TO: Charge hand; Foreperson; Engineer, Senior Engineer

LOCATION(S): Based at Tullamore Depot, working primarily in Grand Rural Area

WORK HOURS: 39 hours per week

SUMMARY OF ROLE

To engage in the maintenance and development of Grand Canal by undertaking operational tasks as required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Working as a member of a team engaged in the maintenance and development of the waterway channel, the towpaths, banks, buildings and structures, moorings and mooring facilities

·         Working in general civil engineering/building construction

·         Working in a water-based environment involving frequently working on and / or in close proximity to deep water

·         Maintenance and development of Waterways Ireland’s property and facilities, including grass/hedge cutting, weed spraying, installing gates/fencing, litter collection, etc

·         Working as Banksman (while working with plant and machinery)

·         Assisting crafts persons (building walls/pillars, mixing mortar, kerb laying etc)

·       Comply with and actively promote Waterways Ireland policies and procedures on all aspects of equality.

·       Complete all training as required by Waterways Ireland within specified timeframes.

The above list is not exhaustive, and you may be required to take on other duties and responsibilities for the effective and efficient performance of the role. PERSON SPECIFICATION

Candidates must be able to demonstrate that they meet the eligibility and essential criteria in their application and at interview. Desirable criteria may be used as necessary in the selection process.

Eligibility Criteria

·         Possess a valid Safepass card

·         Possess current full driving licence (Category B)

Essential Criteria

·         Experience of working on civil engineering / building construction projects

·         Experience of undertaking vegetation maintenance activities

·         Knowledge of issues relating to Health, Safety & Welfare Regulations on a construction site

·         Possess good communication skills & Teamworking Skills

Desirable Criteria

·         Experience of working in a water-based environment

·         Experience of working under minimum supervision.

·         Possess a full driving licence for additional categories BE and / or CE.

Short-listing Process

A short-list of candidates for interviews will be prepared on the basis of the information contained in the application. It is essential that all applicants demonstrate on their application how, and the extent to which, they satisfy each of the Eligibility, Essential & Desirable Criteria.

Only those candidates who meet the Eligibility Criteria will proceed to the formal short-listing process.

The candidates who meet the Eligibility Criteria will then have the information contained in their application assessed against the Essential & Desirable Criteria.

Reserve Panel

This competition will create a merit-based panel which will last 12 months. Similar opportunities that arise in the Grand Rural area over the next 12 months will be offered to successful applicants in order of merit.
