Graduate (Trainee) Merchandiser

A Graduate (Trainee) Merchandiser is an entry-level role where you learn how to plan, manage, and trade product ranges to drive sales and profit.

A Typical Day involves

• Reviewing sales reports from the previous day
• Updating spreadsheets and forecasts
• Meeting with the buying team to review products
• Planning stock levels for upcoming weeks
• Making recommendations based on data

• Get the right products in the right place
• Maximise sales and profit

Key Responsibilities

Data Analysis & Reporting

• Analyse daily and weekly sales data
• Identify trends, bestsellers, and underperforming items
• Produce reports to support decision-making

Stock & Allocation Management

• Assist with distributing stock across stores or online
• Support replenishment to ensure availability
• Monitor stock levels and reduce waste

Commercial Planning Support

• Help create sales forecasts and budgets
• Support range planning (what products to sell and how much)
• Track performance against targets

Trading the Range

• React quickly to sales trends
• Suggest actions like promotions, markdowns, or reallocation
• Work closely with Buyers to optimise product performance

Team Collaboration

• Work with:
• Support communication with suppliers and stores

Skills & Requirements

• Strong numeracy and analytical skills
• Good knowledge of Excel (very important)
• Strong attention to detail
• Commercial awareness (understanding customer behaviour and trends)
• Interest in fashion/retail
• Good communication and teamwork skills

Entry Requirements

• Degree (business, economics, fashion, maths, or similar)
• Internships, retail jobs, or placement year
