Applications are now open for the role of Groomsperson with An Garda Síochána at the Garda Mounted Unit, Áras an Uachtaráin, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8.

This hands-on role involves the care and welfare of Garda horses, including feeding, exercising, stable management and monitoring horse health.

Working as part of the Mounted Unit, you will help support horses such as Garda Mount Ruiarí, which play an important role in policing, public events and community engagement.

Salary Scale: €36,963 – €42,808

16.667% Shift Allowance plus applicable Sunday and Public Holiday payments.

The role also requires the successful candidate to:

  • Be a competent rider.
  • Attend to daily stable management duties, including mucking out, feeding, watering, etc.
  • Be responsible for recurring tasks relating to the order of feed and bedding, routine farrier visits, tack maintenance, manure disposal etc.
  • Maintain cleanliness and general upkeep of the yard.
  • Exercise horses in accordance with the schedule or as directed.
  • Observe and monitor the general health of horses.
  • Report and keep records on feed and water intake or abnormal manure or any evidence of health or lameness problems in horses.
  • Be prepared to work tours of duty as assigned, including weekends, public holidays and occasionally unsocial hours including tours away from base.
  • Supervise part-time and other contracted groom’s persons (Civilian Support Staff) as directed.
  • Maintain a level of physical fitness commensurate with the physical demands of all Mounted Unit duties and satisfactorily pass a medical examination.
  • Attend any appropriate training courses applicable to a member of the Garda Mounted Unit.
  • Promptly report any issues arising in relation to the operation of the unit.
  • Possess the ability to perform effectively as a team member.
  • Have the attributes and motivation to undergo intensive training in the care and welfare of horses.
  • Have the knowledge and ability to identify a variety of equine ailments and use appropriate first aid.
  • Assist in the care and recuperation of horses with short-term illness.
  • Be responsible for the care and cleanliness of all horses and their environment including equipment, stables and saddlery.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to yard and stable duties, care and welfare of horses, exercising horses, turning out horses, adhering to feeding regimes, waste management, clipping and ensuring supply levels are maintained. Candidates must also be confident in the administration of medicines and vaccinations and liaising with veterinary staff.

Essential Criteria

Candidates, by the closing date, must:

  • Have a minimum of 2 years of experience as a professional Groomsperson, in order to manage a yard in a disciplined environment, including the knowledge and ability to identify a variety of equine ailments and use appropriate first aid.
  • Hold a recognised industry qualification in horse care/stable management, i.e. Equine Studies or horsemanship.
  • Available to work shift patterns, including weekends/bank holidays as the roster dictates.
  • Physically fit to carry out role duties and must pass Garda Vetting.
  • Hold a current full driving licence without endorsement – minimum category B
