Groundsman/Grounds Person

Role Outline: This hands-on role supports the upkeep and presentation of the campus grounds, contributing to a welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors.

Main Duties:

  • Cutting the grass around campus to keep outdoor areas tidy.

  • Removing weeds from landscaped areas.

  • Picking up litter and clearing debris from all parts of the campus.

  • Emptying bins regularly to maintain hygiene.

  • Occasionally marking and lining pitches for on-campus sporting events.

  • Maintaining flower beds and trees, including branch trimming.

  • Keeping the delivery/loading bay clean and free of rubbish.

Responsibility for End Results:

  • Ensuring campus grounds are consistently clean, safe, and well presented.

  • Supporting smooth campus operations, especially for events and deliveries.

  • Helping preserve the condition of landscaping features and sports areas.

Job Knowledge:

  • Ability to operate groundskeeping machinery safely and effectively.

  • Understanding of basic horticultural practices and outdoor maintenance.

  • Awareness of health and safety principles, including manual handling and fire control.

Problem Solving and Decision Making:

  • Identifying and reporting damage (e.g., to fencing or pitches) promptly.

  • Making on-the-spot decisions regarding maintenance priorities.

  • Communicating proactively with the team to resolve site-related issues.

Planning and Organising:

  • Managing daily tasks efficiently across a large campus.

  • Coordinating pitch preparation with scheduled games and events.

  • Adapting to changing weather or seasonal maintenance needs.

Communicating and Influencing:

  • Interacting positively with colleagues and visitors on-site.

  • Demonstrating strong communication skills in reporting and daily coordination.

  • Following and sharing safety and work instructions clearly.

Essential Criteria:

  • Eligible to work in the EU/EEA.

  • 2–3 years' experience in a similar site-based caretaker or campus role.

  • Comfortable using maintenance equipment and machinery.

  • Basic reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.

  • Flexible availability for both day and evening shifts.

  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Knowledge of fire control, manual handling, and campus safety procedures.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience working with diverse groups on a daily basis.

  • Living near the SETU Carlow Campus for easier access and response times.
