Salary: NCAD €57,897 - €70,733 per annum, €28,948.50 - €35,366.50 (Pro Rata)
*Candidates should note that as per Department of Finance guidelines, entry will be at the first point of the salary scale and the rate of remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with government pay policy. Candidates should note that different pay and conditions may apply if, immediately prior to appointment, the appointee is a serving civil or public servant.
Annual Leave: Annual Leave will be 13.5 working days per annum. This leave is exclusive of public holidays.
Hours of Attendance: Working hours will be 17.5 hours per week (net of rest breaks).
Location: This position is based at NCAD, 100 Thomas Street, Dublin
This role is a specified purpose role funded by the Targeted Enhancement Fund (TEF), this funding is time-bound and the objectives of the funding are to:
- Provide targeted support for initiatives that are critical to the strategic development of NCAD.
- Contribute towards enhancement initiatives that will strengthen the performance of NCAD.
- To consolidate NCAD's position in the higher education landscape.
- Facilitate the development and/or continuation of initiatives that further national policy and priorities
Role Purpose:
The IT Support Officer (VLE Specialist) will support the technical operation, integration, automation, and continuous improvement of the college’s digital learning ecosystem. While Canvas VLEis a key platform, prior experience with Canvas directly is not essential; a strong ability to learn new systems, work with vendors, and apply sound DevOps and integration principles is critical.
The role will have strong emphasis on Educational Technology. The post holder will work across IT Services, academic stakeholders, academic registry, and external partners to ensure that learning technologies are reliable, well-integrated, and evolving to meet institutional needs.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Educational Technology & VLE Integration
- Support and enhance technical integrations between the VLE (Canvas) and core college systems such as the Student Information System (SIS), identity management, timetabling, library, assessment, and analytics platforms.
- Configure, maintain, and support integrations using APIs, LTI tools, webhooks, and secure data feeds.
- Assist with user provisioning, enrolments, course lifecycle management, and academic data flows through automated and semi-automated processes.
- Engage with Canvas (Instructure) and other Educational Technology vendors, learning platform providers, and open-source communities.
Development Operations, Automation & Platforms
- Apply Development Operations principles to improve reliability, consistency, and scalability of Educational Technology platforms and integrations.
- Develop and maintain scripts, services, and workflows to automate routine operational tasks.
- Support CI/CD pipelines and version control practices for integration code and configuration.
- Contribute to monitoring, logging, and alerting for learning technology services.
Learning, Adaptability & Continuous Improvement
- Rapidly learn and develop expertise in Canvas and associated learning technologies, even where prior experience is limited.
- Keep informed of developments in EdTech standards (e.g. LTI, accessibility, learning analytics) and public-sector digital best practice.
- Identify opportunities to improve the digital learning experience through better integration, automation, and data quality.
- Contribute to institutional digital transformation and learning technology strategy.
Security, Data Protection & Governance
- Support secure operation of EdTech systems in line with public-sector ICT and cybersecurity standards.
- Ensure appropriate handling of student and staff data in compliance with GDPR and institutional data protection policies.
- Contribute to documentation, risk assessments, and audit processes as required.
Collaboration & Support
- Work closely with academic and professional services staff to understand teaching, learning, and assessment requirements.
- Provide third-level technical support and assist with investigation and resolution of complex EdTech-related issues.
- Produce and maintain clear technical documentation suitable for a public-sector environment.
- Support testing, change management, and release activities associated with system upgrades and new functionality.
- Undertake any other such appropriate duties, which may be assigned from time to time by their Line Manager
Mandatory Criteria
- Experience in a Development Operations, systems integration, platform support, or similar technical role.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new platforms and technologies quickly, including complex SaaS systems.
- Experience working with APIs, web services, or data integrations.
- Scripting or automation experience (e.g. Python, Bash, PowerShell, or similar).
- Understanding of cloud-hosted systems and modern service delivery models.
- Ability to work within structured processes typical of public-sector or regulated environments.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience working with Educational Technology platforms or digital learning systems.
- Familiarity with VLEs (e.g. Canvas, Moodle, Brightspace) or comparable SaaS platforms.
- Awareness of LTI standards, identity management, or learning analytics concepts.
- Experience in higher education, further education, or the public sector.
- Knowledge of monitoring, logging, or service management tools.
