Role Overview

As a Commercial Manager in the fresh produce industry, you’ll play a crucial role in maximizing profitability, managing risks, and ensuring the smooth operation of commercial activities related to fresh produce. Your responsibilities will involve overseeing sales, pricing, procurement, and customer relations. Your role is pivotal in ensuring the efficient supply of high-quality fruits and vegetables to Wholesale and retail chains. You’ll collaborate with suppliers, negotiate contracts, and manage inventory to meet demand while maintaining competitive pricing.

Responsibilities:

Maximising Profitability:

  • Develop and implement commercial strategies to achieve revenue targets.
  • Regularly analyse procurement costs and identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Monitor margins, pricing, and cost structures to optimise profitability.
  • Identify opportunities for growth and expansion within the fresh produce market.

Risk Management:

  • Analyse and mitigate commercial risks associated with fresh produce sales.
  • Stay informed about market trends, supply chain disruptions, and regulatory changes.
  • Continuously evaluate existing suppliers and explore new sources to enhance product variety and availability.
  • Improve employee and client retention rates through active communication and problem-solving efforts.
  • Assess risks involved with new initiatives, ensure deadlines are met and be ready to handle unexpected situations.

Sales and Customer Relations:

  • Collaborate with team to drive fresh produce sales.
  • Assist customers with inquiries, special orders, and product recommendations.
  • Maintain strong relationships with clients, suppliers, and industry stakeholders.

Inventory and Procurement:

  • Manage fresh produce inventory levels to ensure availability and freshness.
  • Ensure optimal stock levels to meet demand while minimising waste.
  • Oversee procurement processes, including sourcing, negotiation, and supplier relationships.

Team Player:

  • Motivate produce department staff.
  • Support team training on best practices and department goals.
  • Participate in performance reviews and goal setting.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with fresh produce suppliers.

Supply Chain Coordination:

  • Coordinate with Supply Chain on transportation and logistics to ensure timely deliveries.
  • Collaborate with Supermarket Buyers: Work closely with supermarket buyers to align procurement with sales strategies.
  • Manage Seasonal Variations: Anticipate and plan for seasonal fluctuations in demand.

Quality Assurance:

  • Product Quality: Inspect incoming produce shipments for freshness, quality, and compliance.
  • Traceability: Ensure traceability of products.
  • Food Safety: Adhere to health and safety regulations related to fresh produce handling.

This list is not exhaustive, it should direct the individual as to the expectations of the business, but the role should develop as a result of discussions between the individual and the Manager.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Agriculture, or related field (preferred, not essential)
  • Relevant experience in fresh produce sales, procurement, or management (preferred, not essential)
  • Strong commercial awareness, negotiation skills, and business acumen.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
