The Opportunity

At Almac Diagnostics, our laboratories play a critical role in supporting the development and delivery of innovative diagnostic solutions that help improve patient outcomes around the world. We are currently recruiting for both Laboratory Scientist and Senior Laboratory Scientist positions to join our growing operational laboratory team in Craigavon.

As a Laboratory Scientist, you will carry out a range of molecular biology and laboratory-based activities, ensuring samples are processed accurately and efficiently while maintaining the highest standards of quality and compliance. You'll gain exposure to advanced genomic technologies, support the introduction of new testing methods, and work as part of a collaborative team delivering high-quality results to customers.

As a Senior Laboratory Scientist, you will combine hands-on scientific expertise with leadership responsibilities. In addition to performing complex molecular biology analyses, you will coordinate laboratory activities, provide day-to-day guidance to scientists within the team, support laboratory operations, review data and quality processes, and contribute to the ongoing development and optimisation of laboratory methods and technologies.

Key responsibilities include:

Laboratory Scientist

  • Performing molecular biology and genomic testing techniques
  • Processing samples and conducting quality control activities
  • Maintaining laboratory equipment, reagents and consumables
  • Generating accurate laboratory data and associated documentation
  • Supporting method development and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Ensuring compliance with laboratory procedures and quality standards

Senior Laboratory Scientist

  • Coordinating daily laboratory operations and workflow activities
  • Leading and supporting laboratory scientists to deliver projects on time
  • Performing and reviewing complex molecular biology analyses
  • Monitoring quality control processes and laboratory performance
  • Reviewing and verifying laboratory data and documentation
  • Supporting customers, suppliers and cross-functional teams
  • Contributing to the development of new laboratory methods, technologies and quality systems

What you need to be successful

We're looking for enthusiastic scientists who are passionate about laboratory science, maintain exceptional attention to detail, and enjoy working within a collaborative team environment where quality and accuracy are paramount.

Essential Criteria

Laboratory Scientist

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Biology, Molecular Biology or a related life sciences discipline
  • Previous practical laboratory experience
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to producing accurate results
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications

Senior Laboratory Scientist

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Biology, Molecular Biology or a related life sciences discipline
  • Significant experience performing and coordinating genomic testing activities
  • Strong working knowledge of high-throughput genomic technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate laboratory activities and support team delivery
  • Excellent problem-solving and organisational skills
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work across multiple stakeholders
  • Proven ability to maintain high levels of quality and accuracy within a regulated environment

Desirable Criteria

Laboratory Scientist

  • Experience with genomic and/or proteomic laboratory techniques
  • Experience working within a clinical diagnostic laboratory environment

Senior Laboratory Scientist

  • Postgraduate qualification in Biology, Molecular Biology or related life sciences discipline
  • Supervisory experience within a regulated laboratory environment (e.g. ISO 13485, ISO 15189, GCP)
  • Experience implementing new genomic technologies
  • Significant troubleshooting and technical problem-solving experience within a laboratory setting

Applicants must have eligibility to work in the UK/IE with no restrictions OR possess a valid work permit that will allow you to take up full time employment in the UK/IE.

These opportunities are based within Almac Diagnostics in Craigavon and may require operation across Almac Diagnostics laboratory sites as required.

The Laboratory Scientist role is ideal for candidates looking to further develop their technical laboratory expertise within a diagnostic setting, while the Senior Laboratory Scientist role offers additional responsibility for laboratory coordination, scientific leadership and the development of laboratory processes and technologies.
