Learning Support Assistant
Salary: £24,790 – £25,183 per annum, pro-rata
Job Purpose
The Learning Support Assistant will be responsible for providing additional learning support to students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. This includes working one-to-one, in small groups, or within classrooms to support students’ education and social development.
Students may present with a variety of needs including literacy difficulties, Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, mental health challenges, or mobility difficulties.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
The successful candidate may be responsible for any of the following duties:
Learning Support
Provide additional learning support as detailed in the Individual Support Plan (ISP), as directed by the Line Manager.
Support students in a variety of settings: classrooms, exam halls, kitchens, science labs, and workshops.
Assist during extracurricular activities including meetings, tutorials, educational trips, career events, and formals.
Support students by reading, prompting, or note-taking as required in their ISP.
Promote and assist with specialist equipment or assistive technology.
Help students locate research materials and resources for assignments/projects.
Support students in collecting books/laptops from the Learning Resource Centre.
Provide one-to-one support during breaks and lunchtimes (which may include ordering or paying for food, or assisting during meals).
Support students during class assessments or exams, as directed.
Promote access to counselling services and other health/wellbeing supports.
Liaise with Line Manager and curriculum staff, ensuring confidentiality.
Refer safeguarding concerns to designated staff as per policy.
Support students during fire evacuations if required.
Administration & Record Keeping
Liaise with Line Manager to ensure support is delivered according to each ISP.
Submit monthly pay claims and required paperwork by deadlines.
Complete learning support records and other reports/forms (e.g., Normal Way of Working forms for exam access).
Update Learning Support Manager/Coordinator regularly.
Assist in risk assessments as required.
Attend meetings and participate in mandatory training.
Maintain knowledge of policies (Learning Support, Examination Support, Safeguarding).
Undertake other duties appropriate to the grade and post.
General
Participate in enrolment cover rota.
Occasionally work outside normal hours.
Provide oral and written reports as required.
Comply with documentation and authorisation procedures.
Promote the College positively and abide by College policies and procedures.
Ensure compliance with health, safety, and equality requirements.
Abide by the Learning Support Code of Conduct.
Remain flexible as duties evolve with College needs.
Personnel SpecificationEssential Eligibility Criteria
Minimum of five GCSE passes (or equivalent), including Maths and English.
At least 6 months’ experience working with young people or adults in a support or educational setting (paid, unpaid, or through study).
Competence in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, etc.).
Other Essential Criteria
The role may require travel between College sites. Applicants must demonstrate how they can meet this requirement, e.g.:
Holding a full current driving licence valid in Northern Ireland and access to a car for business use, or
Access to alternative transport enabling full fulfilment of duties.
