We are seeking a suitably qualified Legal and Business Affairs Executive to join Screen Ireland’s Legal and Business Affairs department. Reporting to the Head of Policy, Legal and Business Affairs, this role is responsible for managing a significant portion of Screen Ireland’s project contracting. The successful candidate will have an understanding of audiovisual financial structures and legal issues within the sector. Working independently under pressure, they must prioritise tasks, exercise sound judgment, and ensure compliance in all contractual matters.

Job Grade

It is anticipated that in order to have the required skills and competencies, the Higher Executive Officer post will be at the First Point level.

Reporting Line

The Legal and Business Affairs Executive will report directly to the Head of Policy, Legal and Business Affairs. Reporting structures are regularly reviewed and may be adjusted to meet business needs.

Role Overview

The Legal and Business Affairs Executive plays a key role in managing Screen Ireland’s production and development contracts, ensuring legal compliance, and supporting strategic initiatives. Reporting to the Head of Policy, Legal and Business Affairs, the role involves negotiating and overseeing agreements, managing financial commitments, and ensuring regulatory adherence within the film, TV, animation, and documentary sectors. Working closely with internal teams and industry stakeholders, the successful candidate will handle complex legal and business matters in a fast-paced environment, contributing to the effective management of Screen Ireland’s funding and development processes.

Function Overview

The Legal and Business Affairs function at Screen Ireland is responsible for ensuring legal compliance, managing contract negotiations, including production and development, and providing strategic legal guidance. The function oversees all aspects of legal documentation, risk management, policy development, and regulatory adherence, while fostering strong internal and external relationships. Additionally, it ensures compliance with data protection and confidentiality requirements. The function plays a pivotal role in shaping policy and strategy, aligning legal practices with industry standards and Screen Ireland's objectives.

Position Profile and Key Responsibilities

  • Draft, negotiate, and manage contracts for Screen Ireland’s funding awards, including production and development for feature film, TV drama, animation, and documentaries. 
  • Assist the Head of Policy, Legal and Business Affairs and Project Managers with work scheduling, project-related queries, and addressing legal and financial complexities. 
  • Monitor and track weekly payments for all funded projects, ensuring compliance with contractual obligations. 
  • Support the development and implementation of efficient legal and business workflows to enhance operational effectiveness. 
  • Ensure adherence to industry regulations, legal requirements, and internal policies in all contractual and business affairs matters. 
  • Provide key assistance in the execution of strategic legal and business initiatives that align with Screen Ireland’s goals. 
  • Collaborate with internal teams, external partners, and industry stakeholders to ensure smooth contractual processes and legal compliance. 
  • Undertake additional responsibilities as required to meet the evolving needs of Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland.

Key Skills/Competencies

Key Requirements Essential

  • A relevant third level qualification.
  • A minimum of two years’ experience in a comparable role.
  • Experience in managing large volumes of communication and documentation.
  • Knowledge of Freedom of Information and current Data Protection legislation.
  • Experience in audiovisual financing and legal structures. 
  • Strong ability to manage high volumes of communication and documentation. 
  • Proficiency in drafting legal and commercial documents with varied complexities. 
  • Excellent attention to detail. 
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. 
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, hybrid environment and contribute to a dynamic, innovative team. 
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills with a strong client focus. 
  • Commercial sector experience. 
  • Ability to meet challenging deadlines and deliver results. 
  • Understanding of Screen Ireland's role within the creative sector. 
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills. 
  • Team leadership experience. 

Desirable Attributes

  • Knowledge of project development and underlying IP rights is advantageous.
  • Proven experience in legal and business affairs, preferably within the film, television, or media industry
  • High level of integrity and professionalism in handling confidential information.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Experience in drafting and managing contracts and legal documentation.
  • A proactive and collaborative approach to work, with the ability to support effective workflows and processes.
  • Irish language proficiency is desirable.

Particulars of the Position

  • This position is at the Executive Officer level and is remunerated at €58,264 per annum. This role will be filled in line with Public Pay Policy at the first point of this Salary Scale unless the successful candidate is appointed from an existing public sector role. Application of 1 March 2025 pay adjustments.
  • This position is a specific purpose, full time contract.
  • The successful candidate will be required to sign the Screen Ireland Code of Conduct.
  • The role will have a 6-month probation period.
  • Will report directly to the Head of Policy, Legal and Business Affairs.
  • The post will be based in Dublin/Galway.
  • Annual leave (excluding bank holidays) of 29 days.
  • Start Date as soon as possible.
