The Maintenance Electrician at Blackrock Clinic is responsible for (but not limited to):

- Electrical, electronic and plumbing systems

- Heating, ventilation and air conditioning

- Hands on training of electrical apprentices in electrical

- All mechanical plant

- Technical support to security supervisor and systems

- First line support on biomedical equipment

- Monitoring M&E outside contractors

- On call duties with 24 hour back-up, be flexible and work overtime as and when required

- Monitoring external contractors

1. Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Electrical Systems
  • Plumbing Systems
  • Electronic Systems e.g., B.M.S.
  • Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning
  • All mechanical plant
  • Hands on training of electrical apprentices in electrical, with first line support in plumbing, mechanical and carpentry.
  • Ensuing apprentices’ safety prior to commencement of a task.
  • Participate in Lift evacuation procedures.
  • First line support on biomedical equipment and pass on to Clinical Engineers if issue discovered.
  • Monitoring M&E outside contractors to ensure service quality and obtaining relevant test data reports on completion of visit.
  • To maintain vigilance and deal with any security incident in conjunction with HOD.
  • Technical support to security supervisor.
  • Maintenance of all security equipment CCTV, Access and Intruder Systems etc.
  • Maintenance of fire alarm system.
  • Member of Fire Response Team
  • On call duties with 24 hour back-up.
  • Stand in M&E Supervisor during sickness and leave.
  • Implementation and monitoring of Quality Assurance procedures for M&E and works carried out by other engineers and apprentices/trainees.
  • Maintenance of M&E manuals and records.
  • Development of new procedures/SOPs and updating of old.
  • Tasks as outlined in the Procedures.
  • Maintenance of M&E stores.
  • Maintenance and support for Med Gases and Air Systems
  • Maintenance of Water System Treatment e.g., testing, chlorination etc., and any issues arising.
  • Review and update service contracts and communicate with Office Manager.
  • Daily management of jobs on Pemac System
  • Assign, delegate and assist team with jobs
  • Repairs to POD Carrier System
  • Repairs to all Catering Equipment
  • Calling contractors if necessary
  • Obtaining all meter readings for energy company
  • Replacing light bulbs hospital wide
  • Manage Emergency Lighting testing and action any recommendations.
  • Pay Station stock up (cover only)
  • Daily office tasks including purchase orders, pricing, ordering materials, Pemac inputting, contract negotiations& implementation. New Equipment Packs, decommissioning old equipment & organising installation of new equipment.
  • Plumbing repairs:
  • unblocking toilets
  • repairs to sinks and general small repairs
  • plumbing repairs, and call in contractors and deal with pricing purchase orders etc.
  • Building work
  • Dealing with builders for various repairs, some to do with snags from previous building work over the last 7 years and some to deal with existing problems eg.,
  • Shower Doors
  • Windows
  • Skirting coming away from walls
  • Floors coming up

2. Communication Skills

  • Communicate with colleagues and staff. 
  • Communicate with Head of Department re. Maintenance and outstanding problems.
  • Accept constructive advice from Head of Department or others if necessary.
  • Communicate with staff and patients re. Maintenance etc. in the hospital in an objective and positive way.
  • Always deal with every problem no matter how simple or difficult.
  • Always get back to people with an answer.
  • Communicate appropriately with colleagues and other members of the Engineering Team.
  • Communicate in a manner avoiding antagonism and reduces conflict and prevents undue anxiety.
  • Recognise self-limitations and seek assistance.
  • Attend and contribute to appropriate meetings.
  • Report all incidents immediately which may adversely affect a patient, colleague or the Blackrock Clinic.
  • Accept criticism and advice when appropriate.

3. General Expectations

  • Assist and train M&E personnel in their development. Also support apprentices for their four year apprenticeship under the ETBC guideline.
  • On 24 hour back-up call rota for any problems that may occur and to deal with them in a quick and efficient manner.
  • Support the philosophy, objectives and goals of the Blackrock Clinic.
  • Observes the appropriate lines of authority.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all patients and the activities of the Blackrock Clinic.
  • Demonstrate flexibility by assisting in all areas of the Hospital/Clinic as required.
  • Demonstrate flexibility by working according to the workload demands of the Hospital/Clinic. 
  • Participate in developing and providing quality care within the Blackrock Clinic.
  • Assist in orientation of new personnel.
  • Continue to develop personal knowledge and skills and seek outside educational opportunities.
  • Present a professional appearance and conform to the head to toe dress, hygiene and infection control policies of the clinic.
  • Be punctual on duty.
