Details of the Service:
The National Trauma Strategy’s recommendations and international best practice state that Major Trauma Centres provide the highest level of specialist trauma care to the most severely injured patients on a single hospital site.
CUH is one of two designated trauma centres in Ireland. CUH/ SSWHG will provide emergency and acute care and a rehabilitation service for major trauma patients in the South Trauma Network
CUH currently treats c.150 major trauma patients (ISS>15- life-threatening) and a further c.500 patients (ISS<15 – life-altering) to include critical care trauma, neurotrauma, polytrauma and orthotrauma. New development posts for trauma in CUH is an enabler to support and build on the specialist clinical services and expertise that are already in place
Purpose of the Post:
The vision for the National Trauma System for Ireland is that it will reduce both the incidence and burden of trauma and increase the survival rate of major trauma patients by delivering a seamless transition between each phase of care. A fully resourced Trauma System for Ireland will, when implemented, save lives and enhance the health, safety and wellbeing of the population, through an organised system of injury prevention, pre-hospital care, acute care and rehabilitation. Inclusive trauma systems are evidence-based and informed by population needs, in addressing the entire care pathway from prevention through to rehabilitation.
The Trauma Co-ordinator role is integral to the holistic case management of patients to co-ordinate and manage patient pathways thereby ensuring timely access to specialist care is delivered to the highest national and international quality and safety standards.
This successful candidate will also describe and develop the Trauma Coordinator service and how it integrates with existing services.
The post-holder will be a key point of contact and advocate to support the patient and their family through the acute trauma pathway, promoting excellent communications whilst supporting the wider multi-disciplinary team (MDT). They will have a key role in attending and supporting the co-ordination of the daily trauma MDT meeting, discharge planning, ensuring patient repatriation and will work collaboratively with post-acute services within the South Trauma Network as it evolves. The post holder will be responsible for co-ordinating the daily management of major trauma patients from admission to discharge. They will be responsible for liaising closely with members of the multidisciplinary and multi-specialty teams, with patients, their families, other hospitals and rehabilitation centres within the South Trauma Network and pre-hospital providers supporting seamless care.
The role will be integral to the ongoing clinical governance of the CUH Major Trauma Service and implementing service improvements on a daily basis, in conjunction with other key stakeholders. The post holder will be expected to work on a 7 day per week 8am-6pm roster.
