Details of the Service
The Immunology Laboratory is part of the Biochemistry Department - a consultant led laboratory offering a comprehensive range of diagnostic services and consultation in Biochemistry, Immunology, Endocrinology, and Genetics.
The Department provides this service to CUH inpatients and outpatients, to patients in primary and continuing care and for selected tests to associated hospitals in the region.
The laboratory is a Health Service Executive (HSE) South installation with links to Medical and Science Faculties at UCC. It also has strong educational links with the MTU Biological Sciences Department. As well as the diagnostic service provided, the laboratory is also involved in teaching both medical science and biomedical science students and is involved in collaborative research work with clinical colleagues. The laboratory is accredited by the Royal College of Pathologists for specialist training in Biochemistry and maintains a Quality Management System which is accredited by the Irish National Accreditation Board against Standard ISO15189:2022.
The laboratory is constantly evolving, exploring and adopting new technologies and platforms to address user needs and exceed user expectations. It is expected that all staff would engage with and embrace such new technologies.
There is an extensive Immunology laboratory service at Cork University Hospital. The operation of the Immunology laboratory depends on a rich and fruitful interaction between clerical, scientific, clinical and nursing staff, as well as close links with third level institutions.
The successful candidate will work as part of a dynamic scientific team in the Immunology Laboratory and will engage with Laboratory staff of all grades, Consultants governing the Immunology Laboratory, Laboratory Management & various Clinical teams as part of their duties and responsibilities.
Purpose of the Post
· The Specialist Medical Scientist Immunology (SMSI), in co-operation with the Consultant staff and the Chief Medical Scientist (Immunology), is responsible for oversight of all Immunology platforms and methodologies in the laboratory.
· Keep up to date with revised guidelines and developments in the area of expertise and implement current breakpoints and expert rules.
· To direct best practice in the Immunology laboratory.
· While the primary role of this post is to manage and direct the SMSI function, the individual may be required to undertake scientific roles as directed by the Chief Medical Scientist.
