At AIB, our values guide how we work and how we support each other. We’re looking for someone who puts Customer First, takes initiative and Owns the Outcome, and is always looking for ways to Eliminate Complexity. You’ll treat colleagues and customers with fairness and Show Respect, and you’ll thrive in a culture built on collaboration where we Be One Team to deliver meaningful impact.
Role Title: Model Risk Manager (Model & AI Risk)
Location: AIB, Central Park & AIB, Molesworth Street, Dublin (hybrid approach to working which will include a mix of on-site and remote working) - 3 days per week onsite
Do you want to play a key role in shaping AIB’s approach to the safe and responsible adoption of emerging AI technologies? Do you want to help AIB make informed decisions on AI and balance the opportunities and threats of AI systems including generative and third-party AI solutions?
What is the Role:
Reporting to the Model Risk Manager – AI systems, Governance & MI, this role will be key in AIB’s implementation and ongoing compliance with internal policies, regulatory requirements and best practices in relation to the management and oversight of Model & AI Risk.
You will support second line governance and challenge across both traditional models and AI systems, including machine learning, general purpose AI, agentic systems and third-party AI solutions, with particular focus on risk classification, control design, lifecycle governance and oversight.
The role-holder will play a key part in shaping and embedding AIB’s Model & AI Risk governance approach, ensuring the organisation can safely adopt, scale and govern emerging AI technologies (including machine learning, general purpose AI and agentic systems) while maintaining ongoing compliance with evolving regulatory expectations.
The role will ensure that governance frameworks are forward-looking, proportionate and adaptable, enabling effective oversight of rapidly evolving AI capabilities and use cases rather than static point-in-time compliance.
Key Accountabilities:
- Have 6+ years of relevant professional experience in model risk, validation, development, audit or risk oversight within a regulated financial services environment.
- Can demonstrate strong expertise in AI‑related regulation, with clear understanding of how the EU AI Act impacts model governance, risk management and oversight.
- Have experience designing or enhancing frameworks, policies or controls rather than solely operating existing processes.
- Are comfortable working with ambiguity and evolving regulation, proposing clear, defensible interpretations and solutions.
- Have excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce policies, standards, committee papers and regulatory‑ready documentation.
- Are self‑driven and proactive, with a strong focus on closing gaps, simplifying complexity and strengthening the control environment.
What you will bring?
- Has a strong understanding of model and AI risk in a banking environment, with the ability to apply regulatory expectations to practical, risk-based governance of both established and emerging AI technologies.
- Understands the unique risk profile of advanced AI, including generative and third-party AI, and can assess how these introduce new risk drivers (e.g. opacity, output reliability, autonomy) across the lifecycle.
- Can interpret regulatory requirements and translate them into proportionate control frameworks, policies and standards suited to a large, complex banking group.
- Can design and enhance model and AI risk control frameworks to address known gaps, particularly in areas such as:
- AI governance and oversight
- Model inventory, classification and tiering
- Validation, explainability and monitoring expectations
- Model change, re‑training and decommissioning
- Can provide robust, evidence‑based challenge to first line model owners, developers and vendors on AI design, implementation and governance decisions.
- Is motivated to raise AI risk maturity across the organisation, supporting education, guidance and consistent interpretation of regulation and responsible adoption of emerging AI capabilities.
