Museum Security Officer

The Gallery wishes to recruit Museum Security Officers (MSO) on a temporary basis in the Operations Department. The purpose of the role is to provide a visible security presence and be vigilant at all times while on active foot patrol in the public areas and exhibition galleries. In addition, the MSO will contribute to a positive visitor experience in the Gallery.

Reporting to a Security Supervisor (or nominated deputy), the MSO will:

· Provide front of house security and surveillance in the Gallery

· Monitor and report security, safety and fire incidents to the supervisor on duty and complete the required documentation

· Participate in investigations regarding loss and assist with resolutions

· Complete the tasks outlined in the Security and Safety Management Plan

· Provide information to visitors about the Gallery’s exhibitions, events, activities and services

· Adhere to all of the Gallery’s policies, procedures and instructions from Security Supervisors (or nominated deputies)

· Conduct other duties as required

The successful candidate should demonstrate the appropriate experience as outlined below:

  • A minimum of one years’ experience of working in a customer service role, front-of-house role, security role or related area;

· Experience in using security, safety and fire equipment

· Basic IT knowledge of MS Office packages

· Relevant educational background in Security is preferable

· Previous work experience in a museum, arts or cultural environment is desirable

· Ability to speak foreign languages is advantageous

· Participate in job-related training in order to refresh and / or upskill professional development

· A proven record of remaining calm while working under pressure when dealing with incidents

· An ability to make sound judgements in emergency situations

· A track record of working on own initiative whilst being part of a larger team

· Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills coupled with a professional, polite and courteous manner when dealing with staff and visitors

· An energy, enthusiasm and a willingness to contribute effectively to a positive visitor experience and keep abreast of Gallery-wide activities

· A positive, flexible and proactive approach to work allied with an ability to deliver an effective security presence at the Gallery

Gallery work environment

The MSO is required to work predominately indoors. Nonetheless, on occasion, outdoor work is required such as foot patrol. It is imperative to note that successful candidates should be physically fit and willing and able to perform all tasks associated with this post.

Citizenship Requirements

Eligible candidates must be:

1. A citizen of the European Economic Area (EEA). The EEA consists of the Member States of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway; or

2. A citizen of the United Kingdom (UK); or

3. A citizen of Switzerland, pursuant to the agreement between the EU and Switzerland on the free movement of persons; or

4. A non-EEA citizen who has a Stamp 4 permission or a Stamp 5 permission.

Please note: A 50 TEU permission, which serves as a replacement for Stamp 4EUFAM after Brexit, is considered equivalent to Stamp 4.

To qualify candidates must be eligible by the date of any job offer.

Job Details and Application Information

Hours of Work: Full Time

As per Circular 14/2022: Revision of Working Hours in the Civil Service, in this regard, a minimum floor of 35 hours per week will apply. This is subject to change, based on local/national agreements.

Salary: Salary will be in accordance with point 1 of the NGI Attendant Grade, Tier 1 Band 2 (PPC) pay scale €1373.44 gross per fortnight as per 1 March 2024 pay adjustments.

Candidates should note the National Gallery of Ireland complies with Department of Public Expenditure and Reform regulations and guidelines on Public Service pay and conditions of employment.

Annual Leave: The successful candidate will be entitled to 24 days of annual leave pro rata.

Superannuation: The successful candidate will be placed on the public sector pension scheme.

Contract duration: Fixed Term Contract – 15 weeks
