Naval Service: Direct Entry, Electrical Engineering Officer

The Naval Service is the State's principal seagoing agency with a general responsibility to meet contingent and actual maritime defence requirements.

We are now recruiting qualified Electrical Engineers to join as Direct Entry Electrical Engineering Officers. This is a leadership and technical role at the heart of Naval operations, with responsibility for managing critical onboard systems and supporting mission success at sea and ashore.

About the Role:

  • Electrical Engineering Officers (ELOs) are responsible for the design, installation, maintenance and upgrade of complex systems across the fleet, including power generation, navigation, communications, weapons systems, environmental control and IT infrastructure.
  • During sea postings, you will be a key member of the ship’s engineering department, responsible for electrical, electronic and control systems governing manoeuvrability, defence and intelligence functions.
  • You will play an active leadership role within the Naval Service, with training at the Naval College to prepare you for both engineering and military responsibilities.
  • ELOs may serve on ships, ashore, or in overseas assignments.
  • After a sea rotation, you will take up a shore-based role at the Naval Dockyard, Naval College (NMCI), or Naval Base, managing areas such as project planning, equipment procurement and maintenance operations.
  • Officers are encouraged to undertake funded Continual Professional Development (CPD) in areas such as Project Management, Engineering Master’s programmes, ATEX Standards, Energy Management, Vibration Analysis and Health & Safety qualifications.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Educational/Professional Qualifications:
    • Level 8 (or higher) Honours Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering
    • Or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Minister for Defence
  • Applicants must be under 50 years of age on 31 December in the year of application: you will be required to provide proof of your age if you progress to the next stage of the competition.
  • You must be at least 5ft 2in (157.48cm) in height. You will be measured during the selection process.
  • No tattoos are to be visible above the collar while serving in the Defence Forces. This will be checked during the selection process and you may not proceed if you have visible tattoos above your collar.
  • Applicants must meet the work permit eligibility criteria to serve as part of the Defence Forces. i.e. You must have a minimum of 5 years eligibility to stay in Ireland. You will be requested to provide proof of working permit on your application.
  • You must meet medical, physical and security clearance standards, which will be assessed during the recruitment process.

Base Location across: Naval Base, Haulbowline Island, Cork.
