Naval Service: Direct Entry, Engine Room Artificer

The Naval Service is the State's principal seagoing agency with a general responsibility to meet contingent and actual maritime defence requirements.

We are now recruiting qualified Maintenance Engineers and Technicians to join as Direct Entry Engine Room Artificers (ERAs). In this role, you'll maintain and repair critical onboard systems including propulsion, power generation and auxiliary machinery. Duties include preventative maintenance, fault diagnosis and participation in emergency response operations at sea.

About the Role:

  • The Naval Engine Room Artificer (ERA) is responsible for maintaining, repairing and ensuring the efficient operation of ship propulsion systems, power generation and auxiliary machinery
  • This role requires technical expertise in mechanical and electrical systems, problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure in a maritime environment.
  • ERAs play a vital role in ensuring operational readiness and safety at sea, contributing to the Irish Naval Service’s mission of maritime security and defence.
  • You will be responsible for conducting planned maintenance and defect rectification on propulsion, electrical and fluid systems.
  • You will diagnose faults and carry out troubleshooting procedures to ensure continuous operation.
  • You will assist in emergency response situations, including firefighting and damage control duties.
  • The role of the ERA works closely with engineering teams to ensure operational efficiency and safety compliance while maintaining accurate records of maintenance, repairs and part replacements.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Educational/Professional Qualifications:
    • HETAC Level 7 in Marine or Mechanical Engineering
    • QQI Advanced Certificate Craft in:
      • Mechanical Automation & Maintenance Fitting
      • Diesel Fitting
      • Motor Mechanics
    • Department of Marine & Natural Resources Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOOW) Certificate of Competency
  • Applicants must be 18 years of age and under 39 years of age: you will be required to provide proof of your age if you progress to the next stage of the competition.
  • You must be at least 5ft 2in (157.48cm) in height. You will be measured during the selection process.
  • No tattoos are to be visible above the collar while serving in the Defence Forces. This will be checked during the selection process and you may not proceed if you have visible tattoos above your collar.
  • Applicants must meet the work permit eligibility criteria to serve as part of the Defence Forces. i.e. You must have a minimum of 5 years eligibility to stay in Ireland. You will be requested to provide proof of working permit on your application.
  • You must meet medical, physical and security clearance standards, which will be assessed during the recruitment process.

Base Location across: Naval Base, Haulbowline Island, Cork.
