Naval Service: Direct Entry, Hull Artificer

The Naval Service is the State's principal seagoing agency with a general responsibility to meet contingent and actual maritime defence requirements.

We are now accepting applications for Direct Entry Hull Artificers. Join our team and play a vital role in ensuring the operational effectiveness of the Naval Service fleet. Successful candidates will be provided with additional training so that they can perform the roles and responsibilities of a Hull Artificer at Sea onboard Irish Naval Service vessels.

About the Role:

  • Learn to manage, maintain and crew the ship while ensuring its operational readiness.
  • Be trained to take on the responsibilities of a Hull Artificer at sea, contributing to the safety and maintenance of the fleet.
  • Responsible for the maintenance, repair and structural integrity of the vessel's hull, fittings and associated systems.
  • Play a key role in ensuring ships remain seaworthy and structurally sound, ensuring optimal operational effectiveness under all conditions.
  • Participate in emergency response situations, including firefighting and damage control duties.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Educational/Professional Qualifications:
    • HETAC Level 7 Bachelor of Science in Craft Technology (Wood) with business
    • National Craft Certificate in Carpentry and Joinery
    • National Craft Certificate in Cabinet Making/Wood Manufacturing and Finishing
    • National Craft Certificate in Shipwright
    • Or national equivalents, subject to approval by the Naval Service
    • Department of Marine & Natural Resources Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOOW) Certificate of Competency
  • Applicants must be 18 years of age and under 39 years of age: you will be required to provide proof of your age if you progress to the next stage of the competition.
  • You must be at least 5ft 2in (157.48cm) in height. You will be measured during the selection process.
  • No tattoos are to be visible above the collar while serving in the Defence Forces. This will be checked during the selection process and you may not proceed if you have visible tattoos above your collar.
  • Applicants must meet the work permit eligibility criteria to serve as part of the Defence Forces. i.e. You must have a minimum of 5 years eligibility to stay in Ireland. You will be requested to provide proof of working permit on your application.
  • You must meet medical, physical and security clearance standards, which will be assessed during the recruitment process.

Base Location across: Naval Base, Haulbowline Island, Cork.
