Naval Service: Direct Entry, Marine Engineering Officer
The Naval Service is the State's principal seagoing agency with a general responsibility to meet contingent and actual maritime defence requirements.
We are now recruiting qualified Marine Engineers to join as Direct Entry Marine Engineering Officers. In this leadership role, you will oversee engineering operations both at sea and ashore, ensuring the maintenance and performance of critical onboard systems. You will play a vital role in maintaining operational readiness and supporting the Naval Service mission of maritime defence and security.
About the Role:
- Serve as Head of the Engineering Department on board during sea postings, forming part of the ship’s senior management team.
- Lead and manage Engineering Branch personnel, oversee technical operations and maintain key ship systems including propulsion, power generation, fuel, water, ventilation, air conditioning and hotel services.
- Be responsible for training and readiness for fire and hull breach scenarios and the maintenance of related systems and equipment.
- Following sea rotation, take up a shore-based appointment within the Naval Dockyard, Naval College (NMCI), or Naval Base, focused on project management, maintenance planning, or technical research.
- Participate in further development through internally funded training and CPD, with opportunities to pursue qualifications in Project Management, Engineering, Health & Safety and work toward Chartered Engineer status.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Educational/Professional Qualifications:
- Certificate of Competency (Marine Engineering Officer) Class 1 or Class 2 (Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport)
- Or a marine qualification deemed equivalent by the Minister for Defence
- Applicants must be under 50 years of age on 31 December in the year of application: you will be required to provide proof of your age if you progress to the next stage of the competition.
- You must be at least 5ft 2in (157.48cm) in height. You will be measured during the selection process.
- No tattoos are to be visible above the collar while serving in the Defence Forces. This will be checked during the selection process and you may not proceed if you have visible tattoos above your collar.
- Applicants must meet the work permit eligibility criteria to serve as part of the Defence Forces. i.e. You must have a minimum of 5 years eligibility to stay in Ireland. You will be requested to provide proof of working permit on your application.
- You must meet medical, physical and security clearance standards, which will be assessed during the recruitment process.
Base Location across: Naval Base, Haulbowline Island, Cork.
