There is currently one permanent full-time Senior Orthoptist, vacancy available in the HSE South West.

The main base for the Community Paediatric Ophthalmology service in Cork will be in Ballincollig Primary Care Centre with outreach clinics in West Cork and North Cork.

A panel may be created from this campaign for the Senior Orthoptist, from which current and future, permanent and specified purpose vacancies of full time or part time duration may be filled.

The successful candidate will be required to deliver, manage and develop the Orthoptic service throughout Cork city and county. The service will be co-located with a number of primary care services and other services all of which serve a large population base.

The Senior Orthoptist will have a pivotal role in the development of the service in the context of the National Primary Care Eye Services Review Group Report and will be required to participate in this programme and in any changes it may bring to the existing service including moving to an integrated acute/community model of care. In this regard the successful candidate for this role will also be required to form linkages with their colleagues in the acute sector to enhance both client care and staff skill set.

Purpose of the Post:

  • Assessment and treatment of children with refractive errors and other visual impairments/eye conditions – including strabismus, amblyopia and ocular motility.
  • Supervision of basic grade Orthoptist
  • The development of this post is to keep pace with the increasing demand for Ophthalmic Care as part of the waiting list initiative and is in line with the recommendations of the Primary Care Eye Services Review Group report (2017) and Slaintécare report

Post Specific Requirments:

  • Demonstrate depth and breadth of your experience in the area of analytical chemistry instrumentation and techniques as relevant to the role.

The salary scales for the post are:

€64,551 €65,928 €67,348 €68,754 €70,162 €71,642 €73,203 €74,758 €76,007 (01/02/2026)

Post Specific Requirements

  • Demonstrate depth and breadth of experience in Ophthalmology as relevant to the role.
  • Candidate must be able to work with a high degree of independence and manage peripheral clinics.
