Outdoor Pursuits Instructor

Location: Golf and Ski Complex, however the postholder may be required to work at other locations throughout the Borough. (Reserve lists may be kept for same or similar positions throughout the Borough)

Salary: Scale 6 SCP20-24 £31,586 - £34,314 per annum plus weekend enhancement/shift allowance Hours: 37 hours per week, Monday to Sunday (see attached sample rota). The post holder will be required to work outside normal hours including public holidays, evenings and weekends to facilitate the needs of the Service. The Council may retain a list of reserve candidates arising from this recruitment for any vacancies which may arise which are the same or similar and are of an equal grade of pay throughout the Council area. Such a reserve list will be compiled and held for a period 12 months All employees are expected to model the Customer Care behaviours of “Serve Passionately, Engage Positively and Deliver Consistently.”

JOB PURPOSE: To be responsible for the delivery of a wide range of outdoor pursuits activity sessions and specialist instructor training programmes across all relevant sites. Supervise and effectively utilize casual, temporary and seasonal staff ensuring all health and safety requirements are fulfilled. Provide a high-quality service to customers and visitors to the centre. Act as Shift Lead.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Provide training, coaching, and various levels of instruction and assessment in diverse range of specialist outdoor pursuits, at various levels and locations across Northern Ireland. Maintain the national standard of instruction required by the National Governing Bodies. 2. Formulate, design and deliver lesson plans and schedules for activities, courses and events. Continuously monitor and assess group dynamics considering environmental and external conditions and amend plans accordingly. 3. Prepare work programmes allocating instructors with the appropriate competence and experience to tasks. 4. Provide training assistance to new and inexperienced instructional staff. 5. Co-ordinate and manage the day-to-day operation and work schedules for volunteers and work placement students. Evaluate and provide written reports for schools/colleges and training providers. 6. Where appropriate assume duty of care/ parental control for users. 7. Conduct risk assessments and help with the development of procedures, Safe Systems of Work and systems relevant to the management of the Centre. 8. Be responsible for routine maintenance of specialist equipment, completing records/maintenance log books. Ensure the safe operation of all equipment within the facility. 9. Take end of day till readings and record and reconcile all monies. 10. Plan, prepare & deliver a wide range of events on site and at various outdoor locations. 11. Drive a range of vehicles in order to transport customers, staff and a range of equipment for the delivery of activity programmes and events across Northern Ireland.

12. Respond to routine and serious incidents and emergencies. Coordinate with full range of emergency services to achieve a resolution and ensure all relevant Health & Safety procedures and follow up investigations are completed. 13. Fulfil the role of Fire Marshal across the relevant sites. 14. Actively participate in various working groups within the Centres. 15. Ensure hygiene and cleanliness is maintained in the post holders work area and exercise general security control over the premises to deter vandalism or abuse of the facilities and equipment. 16. Act as key holder. 17. Prepare documentation for the procurement of services, products and specialist equipment. 18. Undertake any other relevant duties that may be required and are commensurate with the nature and grade of the post. Qualifications and Training •Hold 1 valid Instructor Award in Snowsports; •A minimum of 1 additional relevant Instructor Awards in the fields of Watersports or Outdoor Pursuits; And willing to achieve another one within 6 months from start date •Valid first aid certificate. •Minimum of two years’ previous experience of working in outdoor pursuits; •One year’s experience of supervising staff or volunteers. Key Skills, Knowledge & Attributes •Maintenance and servicing knowledge of relevant outdoor equipment; •Good communication skills; • Customer Focused.
