ROLE AND PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
Develop and deliver a player-centred nutrition support service to players in the following groups to optimize their health, development and performance:

Connacht Academy
National Talent Squad (NTS)
National U20 players (not in NTS)

Work alongside the Lead Performance Nutritionist to ensure continuity in nutrition care across Connacht Rugby at all levels.
Collaborate with the IRFU Performance Nutritionist working in the National Talent Pathway.

Location: The Sportsground, Galway
Contract Type: Part time hours(20 hours/week); 2 Year Fixed-Term Contract

Role and Responsibility:
Service Delivery

Promote and environment and culture with Connacht Rugby that supports nutrition as an integral component of high performance.
Develop a ‘food-first’ approach in nutrition education to support health and performance in all identified player groups.
Develop and deliver player-centred nutrition programmes to players in the Academy, NTS and National U20 (not in NTS).
Implement strategies to support players’ training and competitive programmes whilst demonstrating a comprehensive knowledge of the science that supports sports nutrition e.g. nutrition to support strength development, recovery, hydration, supplementation, use of ergogenic aids, recovery from surgery etc.

Education support

Develop and implement innovative and evidence-based nutrition education sessions and resources to increase nutrition knowledge and behaviours throughout all identified player levels.
Contribute to Connacht Rugby’s Health and Wellbeing education programme(if applicable)
CPD- Engage in continuing professional development (CPD) relevant to sports nutrition (including participation in IRFU in-service meetings) and be willing to participate in research if the opportunity arises.

Multidisciplinary Teamwork/Working relationships

Build and maintain relationships with Connacht Rugby staff based on trust and respect ensuring continuous and open communication.
Support the integration of performance nutrition by working closely with the Nutrition, Athletic Performance, Medical and Coaching staff in Connacht Rugby to maximise the effectiveness of players’ training and competitive programmes through appropriate nutrition strategies.
Collaborate with the IRFU Performance Nutritionist working in the National Talent Pathway in the development and implementation of a nutrition curriculum to National Talent Squad players to agreed standards.
Contribute to the review process on player progress and development in line with the reporting systems in the Academy and NTS structures.

Documentation and Reporting

Maintain records of all nutrition interventions and supplement issue and track measurable outcomes. Maintain up-to-date documentation on online player management system (TSO at present).
Provide or present reports on nutrition service developments to Academy Management Team in Connacht Rugby as requested

General areas of responsibility

With guidance from the Lead Performance Nutritionist, implement, manage and monitor a sports supplement programme that adheres to the IRFU Policy on Sports Supplement provision to IRFU players and follow the IRFU Guidelines and Recommendations for sport supplement use in young rugby players.
Keep up to date on research relevant to sports nutrition and be willing to participate in research if the opportunity arises.
Be professionally responsible for all aspects of service delivery.
Support and work with the Lead Performance Nutritionist in Connacht Rugby and the IRFU Head of Nutrition in service delivery as required.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPIs)

KPIs will be agreed with the IRFU Head of Nutrition and Lead Performance Nutritionist at Connacht Rugby on specific areas of work outlined in roles and responsibilities.
Participate in High Performance Reviews on an annual basis with operational and functional line managers.

Additional KPI’s will be set & agreed on an annual basis
The duties and responsibilities outlined above are not exhaustive and the post holder may be required to undertake additional duties to meet the needs of the organisation.
KEY QUALITIES

Essential:
An undergraduate degree in nutrition or dietetics with a recognised post-graduate qualification in a Sport and Exercise related subject (e.g. sports nutrition, exercise physiology, sports science) OR an undergraduate degree in a Sport Science related subject with a recognised post-graduate qualification in nutrition or sports nutrition.
ISAK Level 1 accreditation or above.
Experience of developing and implementing evidence-based innovative ideas and putting them into practice, including working in an applied and integrated multi-disciplinary manner.
Experience in or evidence of understanding the provision of nutritional support to athletes and coaches to support performance, which should include the planning, implementation and monitoring of specific nutrition programmes in the areas of power, strength and speed team sports.
Experience in or evidence of understanding the ability to modify nutritional programmes according to assessment data, in conjunction with Fitness, Medical and other support staff.
Experience in or evidence of understanding the education needs of young athletes, which uses a food-focused approach to health and performance.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; an effective and confident presenter to a range of target audiences including young people.
Good IT (including dietary analysis), problem-solving and organisational skills.
Full driving licence and access to a car.
Eligibility to work in Ireland.

Desirable:
Graduate registrant on the UK Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENR)
Experience of working with rugby or other collision sports.
Experience of working in a profession team or Sports Institute setting.
Experience in academic and/or applied research in the field of performance nutrition.
