Purpose of the Post

The purpose of this post is to provide a pharmaceutical technician service for the pharmacy department and to all wards and clinical areas.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Professional Duties and Responsibilities:

· The post holder will be expected to live SCH values and be patient-centred, compassionate, and progressive and will act with respect, excellence, and integrity.

· Maintain awareness of and adherence to patient confidentiality throughout the Hospital regarding all hospital activities.

· Dispense individual prescriptions for patients and staff, under the supervision of a pharmacist. This includes dispensing for specific inpatient and outpatients.

· Dispense requisitions to wards and clinical areas.

· Dispense and maintain records of medicines, ancillary products, and Nutrition (PN) products.

· Participate in compounding extemporaneous products.

· Participate in general stock rotation, stock levels, checking expiry dates, ordering stock, and putting orders away.

· Ensure the verification of all medications covered by the Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD).

· Participate in ward top-up services.

· Take shared responsibility for the sorting of returned drugs for recycling or destruction.

· Highlight medication and pharmaceutical product shortages to senior technicians.

· Communicate effectively with Pharmacy staff and other healthcare professionals including nurses, doctors, and community pharmacists.

· Record and appropriately respond to telephone calls and messages.

· Participate in audit activities and protocol development.

· Participate in service development.

· Maintain standards of clinical hygiene within the pharmacy.

· Participate in checking processes in accordance with agreed departmental protocols and procedures.

· Maintain and keep up-to-date records as outlined in the department’s Policies and Procedures (e.g., restricted antibiotics, blood-derived medications, vaccine stock, etc.)

· Participate in continuing education and in such activities consistent with the post.

· Assist in the training of staff as appropriate to the role.

· Participate in personal development and training as identified by personal development plans.

· Comply with mandatory training and all other organisational policies relevant to the role.

· Provide medicines management support to Nursing Staff as appropriate.

· Liaise with service providers as appropriate to the role.

· Undertake other appropriate duties and responsibilities that may be assigned to the post-holder in accordance with the department's commitment to providing an integrated, patient-centered pharmacy service.

· Undertake any other duties as requested by the Director of Pharmacy or his deputy in the delivery of pharmacy services in CHI

Demonstrate depth and breadth of acute hospital pharmacy experience as relevant to the role.

Citizenship requirements

Eligible candidates must be:

(i) EEA, Swiss, or British citizens

OR

(ii) Non-European Economic Area citizens with permission to reside and work in the State

Read Appendix 2 of the Additional Campaign Information for further information on accepted Stamps for Non-EEA citizens resident in the State, including those with refugee status.

To qualify candidates must be eligible by the closing date of the campaign

Eligibility criteria, qualifications, and experience

Essential Criteria:

Pharmaceutical Technicians Diploma or equivalent Pharmacy Technician Qualification awarded by an accredited body as follows:

· Pharmaceutical Technicians Diploma awarded by the University of Dublin, trinity College

or

· Pharmacy Technician qualification at QQI level 6 awarded by Dublin Institute of Technology, Athlone Institute of Technology or Carlow Institute of Technology (ii)

or

· Pharmacy Services Certificate NVQ level 3 offered by Irish Pharmacy union (iii)

or

· Be currently employed as a pharmacy technician in the publicly funded Irish health system

or

· A relevant qualification at least equivalent to (ii) or (iii) above

Desirable Criteria:

· Basic therapeutic knowledge of medications used in a hospital environment.

· Experience in purchasing/procurement of medicines and ancillary substances within a hospital pharmacy service.

Skills, competencies and/or knowledge

Professional Knowledge & Experience

· Demonstrate experience in use of pharmacy equipment, knowledge of Robotics or ICT systems would be an advantage.

· Demonstrate evidence of up-to-date pharmaceutical knowledge in the field of hospital pharmacy.

· Demonstrate awareness of the security considerations / confidentiality involved in working in a hospital pharmacy.

Planning & Managing Resources

· Demonstrate the ability to multi-task, work flexibly and under pressure.

· Demonstrate the ability to work alone and to exercise initiative.

· Demonstrate the ability to work in a changing environment.

· Demonstrate planning and organisational skills.

Commitment to Providing a Quality Service

· Demonstrate patient centred focus.

· Demonstrate evidence of computer skills including as part of the dispensing process.

· Demonstrate a commitment to Continuing Professional Education.

Communication & Interpersonal Skills

· Demonstrate team working skills both within the Pharmacy and in a multi-disciplinary team.

· Demonstrate ability to communicate appropriately to clients, medical staff nursing staff etc.

Therefore it is very important that you think about your experience in light of those requirements.

Those successful at the ranking stage of this process (where applied) will be placed on an order of merit and will be called to interview in ‘bands’ depending on the service needs of the organisation.
