Role Description:

The Vocational Training Programme supports individuals in a two year programme focusing on Employment, Training and Valued Roles. This programme aims to enable people with intellectual disabilities to plan develop their goals and exercise choice, focused on key outcomes of the programme. The programme offers a QQI level three major award in Employability Skills or a series of minor awards may also be achieved.

The movement towards greater community inclusion and active citizenship for people with disabilities will be a key part of the process of making sure that people can hold socially valued roles, from employment to voluntary.

The Programme Coordinator of the specialist service provision should make sure that people with disabilities can explore what for them, would represent valued social roles in their community. Information and familiarisation with the concept of holding valued social roles may be necessary.

 

Principal Duties & Responsibilities of the Post:

  • Co-ordinate the implementation of individualised opportunities for people with disabilities.
  • Ensure that each person with an intellectual disability has the right support and an equal relationship with the team that supports them.
  • Direct and support staff to ensure that people with an intellectual disability can achieve Valued Social Roles in their Community.
  • Lead, support and assist staff with the delivery of the programme.
  • Support and supervise staff, Government Scheme participants, volunteers and students in order to enable learners to achieve their goals.
  • Supervise employees that are assigned to this post, including recruitment, development, training, discipline and performance in accordance with Corlann policies and procedures.
  • Ensure staff have the required knowledge, skills and competence to fulfil their role and that staff training and development opportunities are available within the organisation and provided to increase the efficiency of job performance and the quality of learner outcomes staff training and development will be as agreed through the LCETB business planning process and in line with budgetary constraints.
  • Ensure that work practices are in line with current policies and procedures.
  • Promote open communication within the service.
  • Build professional relationships and work effectively with a wide range of organisations and professionals in the community in all sectors.
  • Secure the team’s active participation in the delivery of a high quality service to learner’s and families.
  • Identify ways in which tasks and operations influence the quality of programme delivery as outlined in the Training Programme Specification, Operational Guidelines and annual Business Plan agreed with the LCETB.
  • Plan and provide programmes within the specified timeframes of agreements.
  • Be conscious of other funding options that may be available to the person outside of Corlann resources.

 

Leadership and Developing Individuals:

  • Give direction to staff, learners and their families
  • A lead role in guiding the coordination and delivery of the programme outcomes through staff so that individuals achieve their personal goals, have a good quality of life and succeed to the best of their abilities.
  • Motivate, train and develop staff in order to promote their creativity, interest, involvement, and contribution towards the successful achievement of the organisation's objectives and plans.

§  Ensure staff training needs are met in line with the organisation vision, and that training is communicated and team members are facilitated, so that they can attend.

  • Manage the performance of the team using best practice in relation to resources, training and their welfare.
  • Establish a clear understanding of what each person’s role is to accomplish.
  • Meet with your team regularly, whilst continually reviewing, evaluating, and improving all aspects of the service.

 

Work Tasks:

·      Plan and implement programmes and schemes of work that adhere to the required standard agreement with LCETB.

·      Focus on Learner’s involvement in the community and inclusive opportunities as a priority.

·     Direct purposeful and appropriate lesson plans that provide for effective teaching strategies.

·     Plan and implement a program of study designed to meet individual needs of learners.

·     Create a classroom environment conducive to learning by employing a variety of appropriate teaching strategies.

·     Encourage student enthusiasm for the learning process and the development of good study habits.

·     Provide progress reports as required.

·     Prepare substitute folder containing appropriate information as required.

·     Recognise learning difficulties and make referrals as appropriate.

·     Demonstrate a strong grasp of subject matter.

·     Use effective oral and written expression.

 

Curriculum Development:

·     Keep abreast of current subject matter, knowledge and learning theory and be prepared to share this knowledge for continual improvement of the course curriculum.

·     Assist with the ongoing curriculum revision process, including the revision of written courses of study.

·     Become acquainted with supplemental services beneficial to students as an extension of regular classroom activities.

 

Classroom Management:

·      Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect learners, equipment, materials and facilities.

·     Share responsibility during the day for the supervision of students in all areas.

·     Provide for the supervision of assigned students when circumstances require a brief absence from the assignment.

 

Initiative & Proactivity:

  • Promote a ‘can do’ attitude within staff teams.
  • Promote flexibility and creative thinking within staff teams.

 

Learner and Families Focus:

  • Work closely with family members to ensure the best interests of the person with an intellectual disability are paramount.
  • Ensure that the person is at the centre of the service.
  • Communicate our values and principles to clients, families, staff and the public and ensuring that individual programmes and activities meet the needs and choices of lifestyles that the clients desire.

 

Health & Safety Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Be conscious of Health & Safety matters in the workplace and, in particular, to comply with employees’ obligations as set out under Section 2 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 2005. Ensure that the procedures set out in the Safety Statement are implemented at all times. Become familiar with and practise fire drill procedures within places of work, i.e. fire detection, evacuation and fire fighting.
  • Promote safety in all environments for individuals supported by our Services and employees in line with the Corlann Health and Safety Statement.

  • Report all accidents to your line manager and human resources immediately as they occur.

 

Working Relationships and Communication:

  • Understand and operate all relevant local and organisational procedures, directives and general information made available through the line manager.
  • Develop and contribute to good working relationships in the Organisation and with all other relevant personnel.
  • Report to and appraise line manager or designate of all work-related issues and difficulties.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality relating to matters regarding personnel and services.
  • Attend and actively participate in staff meetings as required.
  • In the organisation there is a strong emphasis on teamwork and it is therefore essential to foster good working relationships with all members of the team and other colleagues in the Corlann services.
  • Ensure there is regular communication within your team and with your line manager.

 

General Duties and Responsibilities:

·     To ensure confidentiality in all matters concerning individuals using our service and staff, including the safe storage of reports and records.

·     Ensure that all accidents are reported promptly.

·     To attend all training that is offered to you, so that you fully understand and work with all the procedures and guidelines within the organisation, with a particular emphasis on those concerned with alleged abuse.

·     An essential requirement of the positions is availability to deal with any emergencies, which may arise outside of normal working hours.

·     It is your duty to report any concerns you have for the safety and welfare of the clients of Corlann services Clare to your Manager immediately in line with Trust in Care (2005). You are also legally obliged to comply with the Criminal Justice (Withholding of Information on Offences Against Children and Vulnerable Persons) Act, 2012.

·     Be aware of and abide by local security procedures relating to the workplace.

·     To perform such other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Service Leader (or Designate).

·     To ensure that the vision statement of Corlann is promoted and actively implemented.

·     As the duties and responsibilities of any post in the Services are likely to change with the ongoing needs of the Service, staff are expected to have a high level of flexibility, and a willingness and an ability to develop new approaches to their work. The context of this post may change as the organisation grows.
