Job Summary

Duration:

Temporary externally funded non Grant-in-Aid contract post, the indicative duration of which is 7 months, subject to contract. A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled; such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 12 months.

Background 

APC Microbiome Ireland (formerly Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre) was formed in 2003 with funding from Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) and in conjunction with key industry partners, it represents a seamless collaboration between UCC, Teagasc and MTU. It is widely recognised that the gut microbiota plays an important role in human health and has become one of the most dynamic, complex and exciting areas of research in both food and pharmaceutical arenas. Over the last decade APC Microbiome Ireland has established itself as one of the leading global centres in gut microbiota research.

APC Microbiome Ireland has made several landmark discoveries and has published over 2,500 research articles in peer-reviewed journals, generating many journal covers and associated editorials. APC Microbiome Ireland collaborates with over 20 industry partners and employs over 300 individuals, from the scientific PI’s funded by the partner Institutions, the management team, and a dedicated group of research scientists, research assistants and postgraduate students.

This project will be under the guidance ofDr Catherine Stanton.

Basic Function

This research officer will be involved in the project management of the existing APC Microbiome Ireland projects and APC Microbiome Ireland related projects. The successful candidate will contribute extensively to the project management of the APC’s ‘MiMIC’ Industry Spoke, assist in the coordination, writing and submission of international and national funding agency proposals, preparation of project budgets, and general project management. The person recruited would need to have exceptional project management and writing skills and be a good communicator with a capacity to organise, manage and prioritise a significant workload, often working to tight deadlines.

Job Objectives

  • To provide an effective administrative framework to support the ongoing development of the research project/area.

  • To implement agreed policy and procedures including administration, personnel, and resources for the overall development of the research project.

  • To allocate, delegate and supervise work of the research staff, as is appropriate.

  • To provide specific technical inputs to the research agenda such as literature review, data analysis and preparing reports. Writing and contributing to research reports, policy briefs and other documents.

  • To present research results internally and externally at conferences, meetings, including preparing presentations.

  • To disseminate research results through web pages, media conferences etc.

  • To represent the research project/area at events, meetings and networking.

  • To administer financial and budgetary functions, including purchasing and cost controls.

  • To assist with the preparation of recruitment advertisements and job particulars for posts within the research area.

  • To assist with managing the administrative workloads to support the research project/area

  • To assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service Charter and Action Plan.

  • To actively participate in the annual business planning and Performance Management Development System (PMDS) processes.

  • Fully co-operate with the provisions made for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of themselves, fellow staff and non-Teagasc staff and co-operate with management in enabling Teagasc to comply with legal obligations. This includes full compliance with the responsibilities outlined in the Safety Statement.

  • Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time

Qualifications

  • Candidates must have a QQI honours Level 8 degree in microbiology, food science or related discipline.
  • A postgraduate degree and/or research experience in Microbiology or a related discipline would be a distinct advantage.

  • Project Management qualification.

Skills

  • Excellent writing and organisation skills.

  • Proven experience of providing high level administrative support to a research project or in a research area.

  • Demonstrate achievements in delivering results on a research project or in a research area.

  • Accurate, with attention to detail and an ability to work to tight deadlines.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively with dynamic and diverse staff and management. 

  • Proven record of scientific communications.

  • Aptitude for multidisciplinary approaches.

  • Experience in grant proposal coordination and management.

  • Experience in Project Management.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of funding programmes, application processes, deadlines etc
  • Knowledge of both the infant microbiome and probiotic commercialization fields of research.

Behavioural Competencies

  • Ability to work as part of a team, including consulting, collaborating and building relationships with key stakeholders.

  • Strives for high quality of work and demonstrates commitment to the programme.

  • Ability to communicate effectively to enable knowledge and technology transfer.

Eligibility This is an open public competition. Should a current serving Teagasc staff member be successful in their application through open public competition for this post, their current contract of employment with Teagasc will come to an end on taking up this post.
