Details of Service

Bantry General Hospital (BGH) is a 90 bed rural and remote model 2R Acute General Hospital providing inpatient, outpatient and day patient services. It provides undifferentiated medical care and day case surgical activity for the people of West Cork and South Kerry.

BGH operates on a 24 hour open access basis for undifferentiated medical intake. The hospital caters for all acute medical emergencies and has a Medical Assessment Unit and a High Dependency Unit. It also has a Rehabilitation and Acute Stroke Unit and a Care of the Elderly Ward. Bantry General Hospital provides elective Day Case Surgery, Minor Procedures and Endoscopy Day Cases. Special Nursing includes Cardiac Rehabilitation and Stroke.

BGH is a site for clinical placements for the undergraduate student nurse programme delivered in partnership with the Institute of Technology, Tralee, Co. Kerry.

The Endoscopy Unit is a newly built state of the art modern unit with 2 procedure rooms. The layout provides for one way patient flow & seamless private movement through the unit for our patients. The unit is supported by both visiting surgeons & gastroenterologist.

The unit has just been handed over & procedures commenced in February 2025.

The potential for growth & expansion in this area is apparent & the ANP role would support existing as well as scoping out additional expaned service in line with Endoscopy requirements for the region.

Six Health Regions have been established within the HSE, on the basis of the geographical boundaries agreed by the Government in July 2019 and they will be operational from 2024.

Each Health Region will be tasked with population specific planning resourcing and delivery of health and social care services for the needs of its unique population. This will result in improved accountability and governance in terms of finance and performance, while also bringing decision-making closer to the frontline.

Health Regions will enable and empower staff to provide services that are:

• Integrated, locally planned and delivered

• Easier to access and navigate

• Available closer to home

Health Regions are geographically based units with clearly defined populations. They align community and hospital services within specific areas. The HSE will retain a strong but leaner central organisation, with more service provision developed at a local level.

The HSE South West health region will manage and deliver all public health and social care services in Cork and Kerry. HSE South West includes all hospital and community healthcare services in the region.

• Cork Kerry Community Healthcare CKCH

The Department of Population and Public Health is also now aligned with this health region

South / South West Hospital Group and Cork Kerry Community Healthcare became part of HSE South West health region on 3rd March 2025 and the transition to the new structures will continue throughout 2026.

Purpose of the Post

The advanced practice service is provided by nurses who practice at a higher level of capability as independent, autonomous and expert advanced practitioners. The overall purpose of the service is to provide safe, timely, evidenced based nurse-led care to patients at an advanced nursing level .This involves undertaking and documenting complete episodes of patient care, which includes comprehensively assessing, diagnosing, planning, treating and discharging patients in accordance with collaboratively agreed local policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines and/or service level agreements/ memoranda of understanding.

The Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner – Endoscopy demonstrates advanced clinical and theoretical knowledge, critical thinking, clinical leadership and complex decision-making abilities.

The Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner – Endoscopy practices in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct incorporating scope of practice (NMBI 2025), Advanced Practice (Nursing) Standards and Requirements (NMBI 2017), and the Values for Nurses and Midwives in Ireland (Department of Health 2016).

The Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner – Endoscopy service provides clinical leadership and professional scholarship in the delivery of optimal nursing services and informs the development of evidence based health policy at local, regional and national levels.

The Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner – Endoscopy contributes to nursing research that shapes and advances nursing practice, education and health care policy at local, national and international levels.
