Registered General Nurse - Pre Operative Assessment

Bon Secours Hospital Limerick are currently recruiting Registered General Nurse into the Pre- Operative Assessment Department. The Bon Secours Health System has recently opened a new state-of-the-art hospital in Ballysimon, Limerick. This has seen the expansion of all surgical specialties and the addition of many medical services such as cardiology, MAU, hospital access unit and many more.

Post: Full-time/ Part-time permanent position.

Hours of work: Fulltime position is 37.5 hours per week, flexibility around rostered working days and times is an inherent part of the post.

Monday to Friday Roster at present – No Weekend, night duty or unsocial hours.

Elective preoperative assessment is essentially to ensure that the patient is medically and physically optimised to undergo elective surgery. It also ensures that the patient is educated with regards their surgical procedure and is psychologically ready for surgery. Preoperative assessment ensures a more effective use of hospital resources such as theatre time, bed occupancy, surgery cancellations, length of hospital stay and facilitates day of surgery admission.

The position would suit a self-motivated, hardworking person with an ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team. The successful candidates will have excellent interpersonal skills and a passion for delivering high quality patient care.

Role Responsibilities:

· Take an in-depth history from the patient and liaise with external stakeholders such as general practitioner, pharmacy, cardiologists and the anaesthology team.

· Work as a member of a multidisciplinary team – comprising of consultants, Physiotherapists, occupational therapists, TVN and many more.

· Ensure that appropriate pre-operative investigations are ordered, abnormal findings are actioned as required.

· To communicate effectively with patients and families regarding discharge planning.

· Ensure accurate electronic health care records are documentation in accordance with hospital policies.

· To practice within and support the Bon Secours Mission and Values, policies, procedures, guidelines and new initiatives as directed / introduced by the hospital.

Job Requirements:

· Registration in the General Division of the live register of nurses kept by the NMBI.

· 12 months acute hospital experience within the last 2 years.

· Have relevant experience and proven skills in conducting appropriate tests to include, but not limited to, phlebotomy and ECG recognition.

· Demonstrable commitment to Quality and Patient Safety.

· Have experience of working in a multi-disciplinary clinical environment.

· Strong clinical and communication skills are required.
