Position Overview

Cork University Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is seeking highly motivated and skilled medical professionals to join our ICU as Intensive Care Medicine Fellows. This fellowship offers advanced clinical training in the management of critically ill patients, providing an excellent opportunity for physicians seeking to develop expertise in intensive care medicine. Fellows will work alongside a multidisciplinary team, gaining hands-on experience in managing complex and life-threatening conditions in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Key Responsibilities

- Clinical Care: Provide comprehensive and compassionate care to critically ill patients in the ICU, including assessment, diagnosis, and management of acute and life-threatening conditions across a range of specialties, including respiratory failure, cardiovascular instability, multi-organ dysfunction, sepsis, and neurological emergencies.

- Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with consultant intensivists, anesthesiologists, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans for ICU patients.

- Procedural Skills: Gain proficiency in critical care procedures such as endotracheal intubation, central venous catheterization, arterial line placement and other advanced ICU interventions under the supervision of senior staff.

- Teaching and Education: Participate in educational activities, including teaching medical students, junior doctors, and nursing staff. Attend regular educational rounds, journal clubs, and simulation-based training sessions to enhance knowledge and clinical decision-making skills.

- Research Participation: Contribute to ongoing research projects in the field of intensive care medicine, including clinical audits, data collection, and involvement in publications and presentations at national or international conferences.

Qualifications and Requirements

- Full registration with the Irish Medical Council (IMC).

- Experience in acute care or critical care in the Irish healthcare system.

- Fellowship examination in a relevant professional body (e.g. FCAI, EDIC).
