Research Forester, UCD School of Agriculture & Food Science (Temp 12 months)
Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Research Forester within UCD School of Agriculture & Food Science
The dynamic yield models for Irish forestry have become the standard tool for forest management planning. Yield models are used to forecast the growth of forests into the future and the timber volumes that they will produce. However, due to a change to the afforestation of better-quality land by private landowners in recent decades, the existing models, especially for conifers such as Sitka spruce, inadequately cover the full range of productivities now experienced in Irish forestry. Therefore, it is necessary to explore ways to improve the models, especially for very highly productive stands. The DYNAMOD project will start out with an exploration for suitable data and the collection of new data. Based on the assessment of these data, the development of new yield models will be initiated. The project will also develop a web-based application of Growfor, which is the user interface for the full set of dynamic models. The project team will consist of the Principal Investigator, a Modelling Expert, a Post-doctoral Research Fellow, a Research Forester and a Liaison and Dissemination Manager.
