Research Support Officer

Job Summary

Duration:

Temporary externally funded non Grant-in-Aid contract post, the indicative duration of which is 21.5 months, subject to contract. A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled; such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 12 months.

Background:

The APC Microbiome Ireland SFI Research Centre, was founded as the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre in 2003 with funding from Science Foundation Ireland and key industry partners (https://www.ucc.ie/en/apc/about/). It represents a seamless collaboration between UCC and Teagasc, and it has established itself as one of the leading global centres in gut microbiota research. APC Microbiome Ireland has made several landmark discoveries and has published over 3,500 research articles in peer-reviewed journals, generating many journal covers and associated editorials. APC Microbiome Ireland collaborates with over 20 industry partners and employs >300 individuals, including research scientists, research assistants, the management team and a dedicated group of postgraduate students. The APC is a lively multidisciplinary environment with individuals from diverse backgrounds working in teams, sharing ideas and resources.

Basic Function: 

This Research Support Officer will be involved in the project management of the existing APC Microbiome Ireland projects and APC Microbiome Ireland-related projects at Teagasc Moorepark. The successful candidate will also assist in the planning, writing and submission of EU and national funding agency proposals, preparation of project budgets, and general project management activities. The person recruited would need to have exceptional project management and writing skills and be a good communicator with a capacity to organise, manage and prioritise a significant workload, often working to tight deadlines.

Job Objectives

  • To provide day to day support on the APC Microbiome Ireland projects based at Teagasc.

  • To contribute to the overall management of APC Microbiome Ireland.

  • To assist in the coordination, writing and submission of APC Microbiome Ireland reports.

  • To monitor project budget and spend.

  • To assist in the planning, writing and submission of proposals to EU and National funding agencies.

  • To participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, and support and encourage staff participation.

  • To assist in the dissemination, communication and exploitation of the research outputs, e.g. supporting publications in high impact journals, conference attendance, etc.

  • To source data and statistics of relevance.

  • To ensure GDPR compliance.

  • To support research personnel to provide traceability in relation to Intellectual Property Protection.

  • To assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service Charter and Action Plan.

  • To actively participate in the annual business planning and Performance Management Development System (PMDS) processes.

  • Fully co-operate with the provisions made for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of themselves, fellow staff and non-Teagasc staff and co-operate with management in enabling Teagasc to comply with legal obligations. This includes full compliance with the responsibilities outlined in the Safety Statement.

  • Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Qualifications

  • Candidates must have a QQI honours Level 8 degree in science or a related discipline.

  • A degree in the Biological Sciences.

  • Project management qualification would be an advantage. 

Skills

  • Excellent organization, report writing skills and data analysis.

  • Accurate, with attention to detail with and an ability to work to tight deadlines.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively with dynamic and diverse staff and management.

  • Experience in grant proposal coordination and management.

  • Experience in project management.

  • Proven record of scientific communication.

  • Aptitude for multidisciplinary approaches.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of funding programmes, application processes, deadlines etc.
  • Knowledge of project reporting, time management and budget management.

Behavioural Competencies

  • Ability to work as part of a team, including consulting, collaborating and building relationships with key stakeholders.

  • Strives for high quality of work and demonstrates commitment to the programme.

  • Ability to communicate effectively to enable knowledge and technology transfer.

Eligibility

This is an open public competition. Should a current serving Teagasc staff member be successful in their application through open public competition for this post, their current contract of employment with Teagasc will come to an end on taking up this post.

Other

As this role may include travel to other sites from time, to time having a drivers licence may be adventageous. Candidates must satisfy and continue to satisfy during employment with Teagasc, legal requirements to drive a car unaccompanied on Irish public roads.
